I am still out of town on personal business but I’m checking in because I’m devoted to my job. I’m in Salt Lake City and numerous people asked me about Memphis today. They didn’t ask about Beale or BBQ, they asked about murder. The Lester incident is getting national attention to the extreme violence in our city. It’s not that it doesn’t happen elsewhere but how much it happens in Memphis. It’s sad. Salt Lake seems to be the opposite of Memphis, low crime, beautiful clean downtown, nice wide and well planned interstates. Can you believe I’ve been waiting winter to see some snow and I come here and there’s nothing yet you got some in Memphis.
On a side note, I’m really annoyed that many of you can find nothing better to “Rant” about than calling each other racist terms and just plain being offensive. “The Rant!” is designed for intelligent conversation that is open to a point. Please think before you type, it’s easy to hide behind a keyboard. To those of you who have been responsible, thank you.

It is so comforting to hear you say that you are devoted to your work and take full responsibility. I never wanted for a job my entire life up until I retired in 1990. I was always devoted to my job and my employer, however mundane or exciting it was, and thankful that I had a job to go to. Too many of this younger generation thinks the world owes them something

Black On Black Crime Growing In Memphis
Memphis—It’s a subject most people don’t like to talk about, but many in the African American community say black on black crime in Memphis is out of control.
“I hate to hear breaking news cause I always think who got killed this time,” said Hickory Hill homeowner Freddie Askew.
What angers Freddie Askew even more is that the number of African American victims keeps piling up.
“Jim Crow didn’t destroy us, racism didn’t destroy us, it is us destroying us,” said Askew.
Already this year, Memphis has seen 91 homicides. A breakdown shows 89% of the victims are Black. And 84% of those accused of murdering the men, women and children, are also African American. 96% of the suspects are male.
“We’re just as upset as anybody. I mean it angers me,” said Memphis NAACP Executive Director Johnnie Turner.
Turner says what’s happening is the destruction of a race that took decades to build up. And it’s this senseless destruction that makes it hard for the NAACP to fulfill it’s goals in the black community.
I have just been informed the monsters that murdered those people on Lester are now maiking death threats to the staff at LeBonheur. What are we going to do, memphis?
Did anybody else notice on the news last night that the neighbors of the slain family that were interviewed all claimed to have heard shots but not one of them picked up the phone to call police. I would have been ashamed to let anybody know that I was that cowardly and ignorant let alone broadcast it to the entire nation. People in other cities are doing more than just talking about Memphis, They are wondering why a wall hasn’t been built around it….
If this keeps up, I’ll be willing to buy the bricks…

Tell me something? You talk about the crime rate in Memphis and you say that it is (and I paraphrase) it is the black community that commit the crimes.

Shelby County is about 50/50, black/white. The jails and the courtrooms are about 95/5.
Not that everyone identifies their race and gender on here, but I don’t recall seeing comments from any black females. Diversity in race, gender, age, education, background, etc. will go a long way toward some constructive conversations on this blog.

I personally can’t do a thing about black on black crime. All that I can suggest is that for law-abiding black and white people to enact a zero tolerance policy for their own households and neighborhoods.
This means that if you see a crime being committed, call the police. Be prepared to follow through and go to court and testify so that justice can be carried out.
This means that you go through your children’s belongings every single day and see what they are doing. If they are part of the crime problem, then you need to show some tough love and report them to the authorities.
This means that if they talk back and disrespect you and other adults, then sit them down and let them know that the behavior will not be tolerated.
This means to stop being afraid and stand up and face the problem head on.

If gas continues to go up for no reason, everything else goes food, transportation cost, but our salaries do not go up everytime they want to raise the gas prices. I look forward to it as well. I don’t really blame people like Fly. I am not a racist either, because Fly thinks the same way that the mayor does in my opinion. I think that we have to have an intellegent debate on the issues of Memphis and come up with solutions to decrease crime and increase jobs, education, and neighborhoods, both black and white.
The city has been divided for so long and it is people like Fly and the mayor (I just cannot bring myself to say his name) that perpetuate race and separation in Memphis. I live in Denver and it almost does not exsist. It is time to exterminate flies and impeach the mayor and come up with solutions as a community to Make Memphis Beautiful again!

I’m with you on our mayor. I’m white and have lived here all my life and plan to stay here. Many of my friends and family members encourage us to move to the suburbs, but we’ve been determined to stay and not be part of white flight. I voted for Herman Morris in our last election and had high hopes that he could win and begin the healing process, as I felt Carol Chumney was too divisive. But the mayor’s speech after his win made me feel like I was no longer wanted here, just because my skin is white. Fortunately, I’m in regular contact with many black people in Memphis who do not feel that way. Our black civic leaders, businessmen, educators, professionals, etc. would love to see racial harmony in our mutual hometown, and they’re just as embarra-s-sed by our mayor’s behavior as I am.

Some alarming news coming out about the Lester St. killings. The adults have been identified, but the family still doesn’t know which of the children are alive and which are dead. Also, the supposed ex-girlfriend who filed an order of protection against Dotson is one of the ones killed. Apparently, she went back to him and they had another child together.
This case and the horrible Charlene Gaither killing and dismembering shine a light on what is apparently a growing problem here–women who remain with an abusive boyfriend and endanger their lives and the lives and well being of their children in doing so.

I feel your pain. I was born and raised in South Memphis, Trigg and Lauderdale, moved to Whitehaven and left when I was 28 years old. I voted for the mayor in the first election. Back then, I was for the ‘black power’ movement for the mayor at that time.
I left soon after and the more I come back to see my mother and father, the less and less I like Memphis. Not because of the race stuff because that could be eliminated if we had leadership that would commit to healing the city.

Alot of us miss the way Memphis was.
All this really isn’t new. Memphis has always had a reputation of being tough. My mother told me that in the 1920s Memphis was known as the r.a.p.e. capital of the world.Then in the 30s it was known as the murder capital of the world.. So all this isn’t new, but, I guess it’s new to the victims of these crimes.

You can go through my past posts through the pages of The Rant and see, I don’t call racial names of anykind.I could have called myself Henry and people would have no problem with what I say. The people I stay on is the spineless white people. I call them sheeple. I blame the woes of Memphis on them than I do the blacks. Lizz, you are right on. The person(s) who did this is pure evil and has to be locked away forever or put to death. Right now, prisoners on death row are having a case heard by the U.S. Supreme Court arguing that lethal injection is cruel and unusual punishment.
How about we allow their death to be carried out exactly the way they killed their victim? Do you think they would cry that it would be cruel and unusual?
Our courts must stop pandering to the criminals. It is not fair to the good people who have rights too.

Two men who were wrongfully convicted of separate child murders in Mississippi were recently cleared in the crimes based on evidence proving their innocence.
One had been on death row.
The actual perpetrator in both of the child murders has been arrested and confessed.
What is Mississippi had put the innocent man to death before his exoneration?
This is why the appeals process takes so long.
Putting a man to death and later discovering that he was innocent is a wrong that can never be rectified.

MEMPHIS, TN – Memphis’ reputation as a city with many murders goes back more than century. We spoke with a historian Wednesday, March 5, 2008 to get a history lesson on the crime in Memphis, which was once known as “the murder capitol of the country”.
“Memphis has a violent background throughout history,” said historian Steve Masler.
In 1921, the New York Times called Memphis the most dangerous city in the country, leading the nation in murders with 58 that year.
In an editorial from the “New York Sunday Mercury” from 1870, a person wrote, “to those weary of life, but who have not the courage to shoot or hang themselves, we recommend a trip to Memphis.”
Historians say an outbreak of Yellow Fever in the late 1800s contributed to the violence in the Bluff City.
“The number of people left were the poorest of the poor, the people who could not afford to leave. That led to a high amount of illegal activity of people trying to get by,” said Masler.
Decades later, many say the crime and violence is still out of control. On Monday, March 3, six people, including two children, were found dead inside a home in Binghampton at 722 Lester Street. The killer is still on the loose.
Police say it has been a while since they have seen such a horrific crime.
In the spring of 1973, 28 year-old David Sanders went on a shooting rampage on Kansas Street in South Memphis. Sanders fired random shots while walking down the street, killing five people, including a Memphis Police Officer.

go to your email and write your rant then copy and paste. if it dont post then try removing or replacing certain words. sometimes I gat so mad I pound my desk.
Seems the most common words WordPress doesn’t like are a*p*e and a*s*s. Any words that contain those letters in that order will keep your comments from posting. I’m sure there are others, but haven’t discovered them yet.
Anyway, try writing your “rant” in Word or another word processing program. When you’re finished, do a “Find” and type in a-p-e (without dashes) and then a-s-s (again, without dashes). Word will show you if you have either of those and you can change them.
Any thoughts on selling wine in grocery stores? Personally, I’m all for it. Most other states allow it. There’s just something unseemly about most liquor stores, and typically all I want is a bottle of wine to go with a special dinner I’m making. There are health benefits of wine in moderation. Prices in grocery stores will probably be lower. Convenience. Less gas used (and pollution emitted) by one-stop shopping.
I really can’t see any downside for the consumer. I know it will hurt small business owners who run liquor stores, but the legislature could (and should) allow them to sell more items. In other states, liquor stores can sell just about anything they want. In Tennessee, liquor stores can’t even sell a corkscrew.
Anyway, just wanted to hear some other thoughts on the subject. I know there are more pressing things going on in the city, but sometimes lighter subject matter can be a good thing.

I am white male. I have a Bachelors Degree in Human Relations from Trevecca Nazarene University. I have a Master Degree in Management from Brescia University. I am not racist by no way of the meaning of the word. I do make typo errors. I don’t have all the solutions.
However, I am considering “what can I do to help Memphis?”. I have lived in Memphis a year and seven months. I am either going to try to help change Memphis or leave Memphis.
I am not one to sit and complain and do nothing about it. I am considering running for Mayor but I don’t think that I can since I have to live in Memphis for 5 years before I am eligible to run for mayor.
I really believe that major problems in Memphis is due to the lack of government in the City of Memphis. If one does the crime, then one does the time. If we can not control the crime in Memphis with our own police force then we should add to our force or call in the National Guards.
But grocery stores already sell beer, and grocery stores have much stricter regulations than liquor stores on carding people (I’ll never understand why liquor stores were exempt from the new card everyone law; just goes to show you how powerful their lobby is in Tennessee.)

I agree with you that parents can’t watch their children 24/7, especially when they’re teenagers, but parents should have given their children a moral compa*s*s before those teenage years to help the child differentiate right from wrong. When the child screws up (and 99 percent of teenagers do), the parent should then not be afraid to discipline the child and show them the consequences of bad behavior. Instead, too often today parents tend to try to explain away their child’s behavior, making excuses and blaming others.
I know I was no angel as a teenager, but when I screwed up my parents stepped in to set me right. When I got an F on my report card, I was grounded for six weeks. When I lied to my father, I didn’t get to go to the high school dance. When I got a speeding ticket, my car was taken away from me. My parents didn’t blame my teachers, my friends or the police. I made those bad decisions myself, and I had to pay the piper.
Some other things of note about my upbringing–my parents were divorced, but they both remained involved in important decisions about their children; we were pretty poor after my parents divorced and couldn’t afford designer clothes or shoes, but we managed to live in a relatively nice home in a good neighborhood where we could play safely; we were not a very religious family but we were and are very moral people.
Overall, I consider myself very lucky. I’ve turned out to be a productive member of society, and to this day I think it’s because my parents loved me enough to allow me to hate them at times (can’t remember where I heard/saw that quote, but it really resounded with me).

The first thing the Mayor could do is get on TV and say that he has every intention to stop the crime in Memphis. We all know that it is impossible to stop the crime in memphis 100%.
However that should be the goal.

He should take the $500,000 that he just spent by creating useless positions for his former body guards and friends and use the $500,000 toward fighting crime.

Wow, all I can say is Wow. Some amusing posts, some sad, and some truly scary. But then that’s the Internet, nets tend to gather everything swimming at the time, good, bad and otherwise.
Coming from a large metro area here one has to truly marvel at the perception of crime in this city. You would think from the posts that it’s the wild west. Truth be told Memphis is actually a pretty nice place to live, you get a much more balanced perspective when you leave and travel to other areas, or better yet, other countries. You want to see unrestricted, uncontrolled crime? Try many parts of eastern Europe, Kingston, Jamaica or many other places on the earth.
The greater majority of crime is perpetrated on or by someone the victims know. It’s rare that the truly random act of violence happens.
What’s also amusing is the constant back and forth between white and black as if the world was made up of only two cultures (technically there is only one race, of many cultures). Wake up my friends, the world is so much bigger and more varied than that. Like it or not other cultures are penetrating your little bubble of life here and will affect the balance of Black/White love/hate here. Get used to it, you no longer have an exclusive racial fight club. Not to mention that the secret of living here has gotten out and is slowly attracting many ex-pat northeners who love the weather AND the rents.

Now, I did read this morning that the sister to one man killed was saying how much of a “family man” her brother was. I found that amusing frankly. Because he had a rap sheet for quite a long time. Hey Proud, I agree. This is a mess here. Between TJ and the real TJ and TJ posting under the names Fly on the Wall and The Real Fly on the Wall, it gets confusing. Going back through this entire thread, it appears that TJ is the instigator. Always has to be one bad apple to spoil the whole bunch.
Some quick solutions to fix Memphis From Someone who has no stake either way:
1. Quit quibbling over small meaningless issues. Like it or not you are on a national stage now, you have an NBA team, and your college team is kicking major butt. Good or bad they project your city to the nation. It’s time to fess up and start thinking like a big city and not a small town….more on this later (see #6).
2. Corruption will never go away, the only thing that changes is your opinion of the person doing the corrupting. If the guy in office is “your guy” you will always tolerate or overlook it. Again, coming from a big city I have grown up with corruption all my life. This is prevalent in every form of government at every level in many cities. You have a very unique situation here in that your garbagemen don’t need to be greased to pick up your garbage, nor do your firemen need to be taken care of to put out fires (yes, in NY/NJ it’s just that bad). It’s a part of and considered a perk of politics and truth be told as long as your public officials don’t go overboard with it then learn to live with it.
3. Crime goes down when opportunity goes up. It just that simple. This means attracting more employers to the area and this will only happen when the folks that live here get serious about growing this town. If you don’t take your town seriously then no one else will, especially a corporation bringing job and economic opportunity. Memphis has the potential to become the next Atlanta, but this will only happen when the people hold their public officials to an agenda that sets this path as a goal. Think big and you get big, think small and you get Mayberry.
4. Treat Your Police/Firemen With Respect and Dignity. In the north the job of policeman and fireman are looked at much differently than here. It’s not uncommon to see families of police/fire men and women. Some of my friends followed in the footsteps of their fathers and grandfathers being police and firemen. In fact, if you are a legacy recruit they often give you the same badge number as your Dad! Pay the police, have them hire the best and the brightest and you will see a big change in the method and productivity of the force.
5. Time to retire the good-old-boy mentality. Memphis will NEVER be a small town again, so those that want to keep it “the same as it was” need to move or get with the program. Change happens, and this town is in a serious state of change.
6. Scr@w Bartlett, Cordova and all the other little towns and municipalities. This is one city, and a rising tide will float all boats. This means putting aside the tit-for-tat squabbles between these towns and looking at the big picture. As Memphis grows so will these other towns. It’s time to look toward moving to a Greater Memphis Area rather than city/county squabbles because while the county is busy fighting itself take a quick look south, DeSoto/Southaven is seriously getting their act together and pulling revenue across the border.

That is serious. I congradulate you on your opinion. Your right on ALL of your points. The major problem in Memphis is the leadership.
Your right about corruption and it will always be there. What I think is that when corruption is in your face like it is with the mayor and the city council, you have to really look at it and make decisions as a voter to do something about it. I really don’t see the majority of people looking at what is really happening, I see it as the majority voting for a man for his color and not the content.
I am not racist and I don’t want you to feel like I am throwing out a racist statement because I am not. The Character of the mayor is questionalble, and no one is holding his feet to the fire and challening him. Not that face stuff the media does, but actually holding him accountable for his actions.
Then there is the extreme difference of opinion of the two major races in Memphis. It is Caucasians against African Americans. Again, stop looking at color, but the content of every person. It really doesn’t matter which race commits the most crime, the objective is to stop crime.
I think that the leadership in Memphis is driving jobs away from Memphis. The mayor or the city council will not do anything to commit to stop crime, will not do anything to bridge the race gap. They are doing everything to perpetuate it.
Until all the voters in Memphis wants a change in leadership, it will always be a major city with a small town mentality. People have to change thier thinking and maybe vote for someone that is interested in making Memphis the capitol of the south.

And he is very insulting and starts calling names when someone doesn’t agree with his point of view.

TJ, I voted for him twice, so I feel I’m justified in criticizing Herenton. I used to like him and thought he was really sincere about improving this city. He did some great things downtown and in other poorer neighborhoods surrounding downtown. When I met him personally (before he became mayor), he was warm, gracious, intelligent and easy to talk to.
But he lost his grip on reality during his third campaign for mayor, has become an egomaniac with a huge chip on his shoulder and has become totally ineffective as a mayor. Crime is out of control, and he is putting his cronies in high-paying positions while ruining several city services, especially the library. He cannot work well with anyone in the suburbs or the county and just refuses to deal with anyone whom he thinks doesn’t like him.
Quite frankly, I think the only person Willie Herenton cares about any more is Willie Herenton. When he started losing business support, he pandered to the poverty-stricken black citizens of Memphis, whom he promptly forgot about as soon as he won his fourth term.
Quite frankly, I am embarra*s*sed that he is our mayor.
Poor George is gonna be up half the night reading all these posts when he gets back.

Of course anyone who knows anything about this crime SHOULD step forward with the information just because it’s the right thing to do. But let’s be real. This person probably knows something about the crime because he or she is also a criminal with close ties to the murderer/s. Hey RP, where have you been? This is by FAR the biggest response I think that the Rant has of any topic and it is still going. You asked a while back how many comments would this get. I wasn’t sure BUT, I definitely missed my guess! It could go 500 or more now. Especially if the kids keep mimicking the “real” poster here.
TJ, I think some of what you say is true that WW get some criticism that goes personal. BUt, the man has not done anything to reach across racial lines to try and heal or set an example of such. He should have gone to the scene the other night and tried to at least make an appearance for the sake of his political reputation. If he was not so egotistical he could do stuff like that and whether or not he was serious it would at least give appearance. You know what I mean? Politics is like that some folks need to see you even if they don’t support you or you don’t even agree with them.

Good Morning Memphian, I remember years back hen a family of guys named Tiller kind of ruled the Memphis bar scene and joints. They ran rough shod over lots of nice good ole boys just drinking some beer and such. Anyway, they got pretty bad for a while and sometimes got locked up and even were rumored to have murdered a few folks. Well along came a former Green Beret man that was sitting on this street up in midtown one night and he witnessed one of them killing a person. The Tillers were used to intimidating their witnesses on the stands with eye contact and such. Then the witenss would get scared and suddenly remember nothing.
Well in the trial for this murderer the same thing happened and the Green Beret just stared him back and stared him down and testified for the prosecution. Guess what, Tiller went to jail.
I can go on and on with that family and similar stories even some I was involved in. When you stand up to bad folks they go down!

He grabbed them by the nap of the neck, one in each hand, and carried them out to parking lot and set them down and told them ehy weren’t pulling that stuff in his place. Some folks just need a firm hand an not some panty waist judge or “witness” facing them. Sometimes a bad person just needs his ARSE kicked.

I used to work in med. to max. security prisons and you walk through looking worried or scared and you will get hurt. I walked through those places with NO radio. Not because I am bad. Hey Memphian, I went and read the story. I was mistaken on the cousin thing. I thought I remembered him as a cousin (Michael). Good story on him and pretty accurate. I think it had some wirter’s spin too it though. The comment down there on the bottom was kind of like these sisters sayingthese are good people of these gang bangers and stuff. It always amazes me how family just doesn’t see thugs for thugs. Of course I guess I would be seeing the best in my kids too if the shoe was on my foot.

I may disagree with some of the things I’ve seen you write over the past weeks(been having problems getting my posts up so I’ve been silently watching what was going on) but I have to say that you put it WELL when you said “Better to be silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
If you look at the number of people who live in our city…. and the number of people committing these crimes (not only in the city limits of Memphis, but in the surrounding areas like Bartlett, and Germantown, etc) the good, quiet, law abiding citizens WAY out number the bad….. Yet those of us who ARE good, productive citizens have to live our lives in fear of the thugs (thugs to me is ANYONE who can’t obey the law… including our crooked politicians!) For years I thought my husband was overreacting to the crime by getting his carry permit…. now… I am in the process of getting mine! I HAVE to protect my child…. Why should we have to carry a gun to pick our kids up from school? Right now our news should be rated “M” for mature bc of all the violence going on…. and in the midst of ALL of that our elected mayor of Memphis who was “Ordained by God to be the mayor of Memphis” is saying ON television that people flooding the streets with prayer won’t help the crime problem!? Am I the only one that caught that and had SERIOUS issues with that statement? NOT flooding our streets with prayer is what got us where we are!
Being white and coming from a middle cla-s-s background, it would be too easy for me to sit back and judge the adults killed on Lester Street. But I can only speak in hypotheticals, because I really can’t relate to what they went through. While the two men were apparently violent and thieves, those two young women are the ones who really make me sad. Perhaps I missed it, but Marissa Williams apparently did not have a criminal record. I imagine her upbringing was not so great, as she made some very bad decisions in her adult life. She had three children out of wedlock by this man, then left him after he physically abused her, then went back to him and had another child out of wedlock. It just doesn’t seem like she ever had much going for her or had much self-respect that she would stay with him, especially knowing that he was a violent criminal who was prone to abuse.
And Shindri Roberson, he parents were drug addicts and she was on her own at age 14, dropped out of school, then turned to prostitution and drugs. What kind of life, chance or choices did this young woman ever have? Her offenses were so-called victimless crimes, but it sounds like she was pretty much a victim her entire life.
Anyway, my point is that I can certainly understand the animosity toward the men who were killed, but they still did not deserve what happened to them. The young women had apparently never hurt anyone else but made bad decisions that might (MIGHT) have led to their demise, but they did not deserve to die for loving the wrong men. And the children, those poor children, they most certainly did not deserve to die or be critically injured and left to die for days.
A little more compa-s-sion is in order here.

I completely agree with you Anon. I have stated that for those babies to be hurt absolutely breaks my heart. Those women made bad choices true… I don’t think they deserved to die for those choices. Unfortunately there are THOUSANDS of women that stay in those violent relationships (of ALL races and backgrounds… not just poor women). Some take a great risk and leave with little more than the tattered clothes on their backs… others stay hoping he will change. My mother-in-law was one that chose to stay… she and her three children were abused until my husband got old enough and bold enough to stand up to his cowardly father… not all women in that situation are as lucky as she was. Through all of the years of abuse she started to believe that she wasn’t worthy of anything better….. her daughter has the same mindset…. AS parents we have to know that our choices will dictate how our children think when they are older. If we choose to have children out of wedlock and don’t try to better our situation while they are young…. they are going to repeat our mistakes….
My hope for those three children who survived this horrible event is that they are given a MUCH better life than they would have gotten. I’m sure their mothers would have wanted that for them.

I noticed what the Mayor said about prayer. I thought it was King Willie’s way of throwing a slur at the church who publicly prayed for the Schools. I admire the church that would take time to leave their warm comfortable building and go to the school and actually pray for the students and school leaders. If God doesn’t help Memphis, there is no help.
Like I said before, it is sad when our Mayor says to us, he has no answers.
The last time I heard, the city of Memphis was paying him over $200,000 a year in salary to lead the City. A person in this salary range is expected to produce results or get fired. It is sad that we can’t fire him. We have him for another four years.
I don’t know the answer to the crime problem. I do know that the Mayor and the City Council and the Police Department should be informing the citizens some kind of solution. Even if the solution doesn’t work at least we would know they are trying to solve the problem.
If they act as if there is no solution, then the city looses hope.
Without a vision the people perish.
I am praying for God’s guidance in running for the next Mayor of Memphis.
I read in the Communist Appeal this morning that one of the surviving children had a knife stuck in the side of his head when found and another had two fingers cut off. they were still alive but, imagine what those two little ones will have imbedded in their minds. I tell ya, just catch these idiot or idiots and set them down in a super max prison, put the word out that they killed and mamed children……won’t have a cost of prison housing for them.

Well, since TJ let the cat out, I found out a couple of days ago from an in law in the medical field that the adults were castrated too. I didn’t know about the children. Before this we were known as the most violent city, but this takes it to a whole new level. I can’t even find a word to describe it. It troubles me that human beings that live 20 minutes west of me live in a place that resembles the Middle East.They can’t get out even if they wanted to. Whats even more troubling is thet they’ve gotten acoustomed to it. It disturbs me for the elderly as much as the young. I think its wrong to say that prayer won’t help. You can say what you want about the Sharpton’s of the world but if nothing else he is a clear example of how much power a single man can have in affecting the political process. Rather than praying gather your church members, hold a press conference and demand answers. I guarantee you that if you get enough people he WILL answer. He’ll have to.

The courts are too easy on the criminals.
We give them free food, comfortable rooms with color TV.
We drop the charge to a less crime. If they know the right person with the right connections, then the criminals really get off light.
I know people who think it makes them a man to make a woman pregnant. Some men will have babies by 3 or 4 women and go around bragging about this is my child with that woman, and this is my child by another woman. I hear that all the time at work.

Personally marches in my opinion are not my thing to do. I prefer to see a church praying, and then serving (helping the kids in inner city and prison, homeless shelters etc) with food, rebuilding homes and lives and teach kids how to not repeat their environments they grew up in. Teaching a kid to respect and not to hurt as a way of manhood. Teaching them gang banging is not a man’s way but a cowards way. Teaching them that respect starts with you giving it then getting it back. Jesus never went around marching. He went around loving and teaching a better way and He didn’t condemn He loved. You see like me He has loved a lot of people that NEVEr deserved it. If I got what I deserved instead of what He offered then I wouldn’t be here today.

I belelive that you are absolutly correct in your answer. The reason why that is a a “racial” thing because that is all that Memphis can hang his hat on, race. It has gotten worse since the mayor has been in office. Even he has said things about the Caucasian race that was absurd.
Even on this Rant, you see Caucasians though stones at African Americans. I believe that the only way that this will change for the majority (because some of the people that blogs on this page do have solid points and are trying to solve this issue) is from the top, down. To Katie’s Mom: On the surface it may seem as if he (Al Sharpton) is manipulating fear, but that’s the media’s spin on Sharpton. I’d bet dollars to doughnuts that’s the only window you have to him. Fear-monger is the easily digestable answer. In reality though he recognizes the gas that runs politics and quite frankly it’s money. I don’t care the politician, they all rely on money to maintain their power. Take away the money and they become whining, crying children (hello John Ford!). I don’t agree with the man, but I do respect his methodology.
If you really want to take a peek into how religion and power work effectively take a look at Rev. Floyd Flake at Allen AME church. He’s a former Congressman who has become THE power broker for Queens NY (google him). Growing up Allen was always a large church, but now they have become major real estate owners and developers of small businesses in their area. Go near the church and you’ll see Allen Travel agency, Allen Senior Center, Allen Cleaners, Allen Apts. etc. Sure prayer works for change, but redeveloping the neighborhood around your church works a lot better.
If nothing else many churches here have the money and members, but not the drive or organization to become major players in the politics game.

I think that Sharpton and Jessie Jackson both only go where they think they will get the most recognition and fame. They don’t take into consideration the turmoil they leave for communities after they leave. Like most people… they may have a few good qualities and may accomplish a FEW good things… but when they cause riots and drive HUGE wedges into communities that are already under stress…. they completely reverse the good things they’ve done.
Faith without works is void! I don’t believe you can just sit on your hands and pray about it… That’s kinda like the beggar in the Bible that the deciples walked by and told him that they would pray for him rather than offering him food or clothing…. God puts people and opportunities in our lives for us to make a difference and help.

The black churches have stepped in to try to help the Memphis Politics. I am not sure that it is in the correct way.
For example: Pastor Whalum, Jr. is a pastor of a very large Congregation. He has a large following on the radio also. But he speaks openly in ways that divide the Blacks and Whites in the community. (See other Rants)
There were some Black Pastors that talked to the County Mayor Wharton to run for City Mayor against King Willie in this past election. But Mayor Wharton refused to run against King Willie. The pastors were condemned by King Willie for talking to Mayor Wharton.
Many of the Black churchs preach and teach racism. I know because I have been in many of the black churchs and have heard them. Many will preach about how the white man is against the black men. Many will preach the black should only buy from the blacks. Whalum, Jr. supports a bust a move campaign where black churchs pick a black owned business each week and buy only from that black owned business. Listen to his daily radio broadcast at noon on 95.7 Halleujah FM
I listen to that radio station because I love gospel music and I am a musician myself.

I grew up Congregationalist then switched to Catholicism so seeing a Baptist (especially Fundamentalist Baptist) dominated view of things here is both educational and a bit disconcerting. If nothing else being raised Congregationalist has given me a much different view of the role of religion in the life of everyman, but that’s a conversation for a whole different topic.
If you’re not aware, the Congregationalist view (at least at the time I was active) stressed less importance on the structure of the Church (meaning the building), and more emphasis on the “body” of the church (meaning the members). Community service in some form or fashion was as important a duty as service to God and as a member you were obligated to your Community.

You see, believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth makes you saved. Aceepting His free gift is what is needed for salvation. Fundamentalism is relative. The Bible says what it says and I, you nor anyone else can buffet the Bible as much as we’d like to at times. There are something in there that I would like not to be there simply to make my life easier. But, they are there to make my life free.

Three Teens Arrested For Stealing And Selling Guns
Memphis, TN 3/6/06
Two of the boys were just 12 years old. The other one was 14. Sheriff’s deputies say the boys stole six guns out of a display case from Guns And Ammo on Summer Avenue last month. One of the boys said he traded a pistol for two cell phones and sold another one to a girl for $200.
18 year old Rickey wright was arrested and charged with illegal possession of a firearm. He told deputies the 14 year old gave him a gun as a favor. Deputies are still looking for other people who bought the stolen guns.

Proud, not understanding your question. In my view no one is right or wrong, just different.
As an outsider, Memphis, moreso than many other places I have visited, has grown accustomed to two cultures (Black & White) and pretty much one flavor of religion, Baptist (and the many Baptist-like variations). As the city changes and other religions move in and vie for power it will be very interesting to see how Memphis reacts.
I grew up seeing temples, mosques, cathedrals, churches and synagogues all sharing a neighborhood pretty much equally. I would love to see all these houses of worship sharing Memphis equally.

Radio Show Host, Bobby “don’t snitch” O’Jay Criticized, Told Listeners to Beware Calling Crime Stoppers

MEMPHIS, TN – Police are still working around the clock to solve the Lester Street murders. Six people, including two children, were found dead inside a home at 722 Lester on Monday, March 3, 2008.
Investigators are begging the public to call with any information that could lead to the arrest of the killer or killers. However, a popular Memphis radio host is being criticized for discouraging listeners from calling in tips to Crime Stoppers and police.
“When you get it and get all that money at one time, the people in the hood are gonna know you got it and people start talking,” WDIA radio host Bobby O’Jay said on his morning radio show.
O’Jay told listeners to think twice about phoning in tips about the murders on Lester Street.
“People will hit you in the mouth for telling the smallest of things. ‘Man, I heard you say so-and-so and so-and-so.’ People will hurt you for telling the smallest of things, and nine times out of ten, people will be wondering where did that money come from? You can’t just say ‘I won it at the casino.’”
The Memphis city Council is offering a $30,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the Lester Street killings. They will give $5,000 for each victim.
Eyewitness News Everywhere asked Crime Stoppers Director Buddy Chapman and community leader Rev. Kenneth Whalum to sit down and listen to the comments said on Thursday morning’s show.
“I think that’s pretty good advice to encourage people, if they want to get that money, to be careful,” said Rev. Whalum.
“[O'Jay] started out, whether he denies it or not, saying ‘don’t call on this’, and then he evolved into good advice… ‘if you call, be cautious,’” said Chapman.
Chapman said the comment that disturbed him most, was when O’Jay talked about a call he received from one of his listeners.
“Bobby, I got to tell you,” the caller said. “I’ve known some people who have gotten so much money from Crime Stoppers and the people knew. They told it and talk too much.”
Chapman disagrees, stating, “In the 25-plus years Crime Stoppers has been in existence, we have not had anyone’s identity revealed or anyone suffered retribution for aiding us.”
Another listener called into the show, very upset with the remarks O’Jay made.
“I agree with you all of the time, but this morning, you were all out of left field,” the caller said. “That was pretty untactful what you said this morning about the Crime Stoppers.

Rev. Whalum believes people should do the right thing, no matter what.
“I understand the principal people are gonna be nosy when someone has a lot of money… that’s beside the point. The major thing to me is that murder is a matter of the heart, just as morals are a matter of the heart and if a person knows the truth, a person is going to come forward regardless of the consequences,” Rev. Whalum said. “That’s what I would encourage. It’s morally right to share it with somebody.”
Everyone agrees the fear of retribution is understandable, but Chapman says there is still a way to protect yourself and help police.
“This was a horrible crime and whoever did this is an extraordinarily dangerous person. So I’d say, if you feel in danger, don’t get a number and collect a reward.”
O’Jay also said Thursday morning that he received a call from the Memphis Police Department, asking why he was discouraging people from calling in tips. Eyewitness News Everywhere asked O’Jay if he wanted to speak with us about the controversy, but he declined.
How does anyone expect anything to change when you have local black “folk heroes” like Bobby “No Snitch O’Jay bumpin’ his gums with the “don’t snitch” mantra, eh???

Your right. This is comming from me. You are very much correct. This country was built (or supposed to be built) on one of the basis of separating Chruch from State. People go to Church to praise God, not to praise man. And I see that in the Church (whether black or white). We need to take the time to pray first. Put God first and not man.
Where the Churches and Rev. Sharpton got it mixed up is that if they can get in the limelight, the bigger the Church gets and then they can have a Mega-Church on TV and accross cable. They get the publicity. Then when something happens in the community, they come out in droves, but will not stop to give the man on the corner a dollars so he can eat. It’s strictly business to Heisley and he has no interest in this community, and so now he’s dumping players to make the payroll smaller and the team easier to sell. And also, I think it’s been all downhill for the Grizz since we traded Shane Battier. Not only was he a very good player, but he was a great citizen of this community. I know several people who quit going to games because they were mad about Battier being traded.

Postmortem photos draw ire

As public attention to the Lester Street killings remained intense today, blogger Thaddeus Matthews posted three postmortem photographs of one of the victims, 22-year-old Shindri “Moosey” Roberson.
The photographs show Roberson’s face, eyes open, and what appear to be three gunshot wounds to her legs.
“Some of you will be offended by the posting of these pictures, but remember the shocking expression of death on the face of Shindri Roberson could be on your face this time tomorrow on this site,” Matthews wrote, describing Memphis as “the most dangerous place in the country.”
Matthews said today he entered N.J. Ford and Sons Funeral Home with permission but did not obtain authorization to photograph Roberson’s body.
“You don’t get permission to do everything you do, right?” Matthews asked a reporter. “You just go after the story. That’s what I did. My site is controversial in that I do controversial things, but I think the community needs to know how these people died.”
Roberson’s sister, Cheryl Green, screamed when told photographs of her sister’s body were posted online. “Why did he do that? That’s my sister! That’s my sister!” Green said, crying. “I’m mad as hell.”
The photographs sparked similar outrage in Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton. “While I recognize the broad freedoms our Constitution and laws grant representatives of the press and media, and while I will not substitute my judgment for theirs, I want all to know that Shelby County government does not approve of the display of the photos,” Wharton said in a statement.
This is not the first time Matthews has posted postmortem photographs on his blog. The Roberson photographs have news value because they illustrate the brutality of killers still on the loose, the blogger said.
“The family may be upset, but what serves the greater need — the family not being upset or the community being alerted to how these people died?” Matthews said. “It was not to disrespect the dead but to ensure that those who are alive stay alive.”
On the Grizzlies
They may suck, for now, but as someone who has grown up with NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL teams I can honestly say you’re better off for having them, than not having them. I’ve been a Mets fan through good years and bad, but nothing, and I mean nothing, beats the fun of going to a MLB game. same with the Grizzlies. Maybe taking a kid to a game, rather than complaining and moaning on message boards will help steer his life in a good direction. My fondest memories of my father are the times we sat in the bleachers at Shea stadium on saturdays, eating dogs and watching the Mets lose. This is where men bonded, over baseball, beer and hotdogs, and sadly a lot of this has been lost on the youth of today. I love the fact that the Grizzlies are here, and that there are so many kids at the games, this will eventually be a good thing as they grow older.
Having little to no experience with this I can understand the apathy a lot of Memphians have, but for those of us who have been lifelong supporters of teams, win or lose, the Grizzlies are just fine.

I’ve gone to a couple of Grizz games but with limited free time I just can’t get into following them full time. I agree that it’s better to have them here than not, but I just wish a local ownership group with something at stake would get involved and make the Grizzlies all they can possibly be.

I went to the site and just read the story on OJ. It is something that the leaders or personalites in Memphis can perpetuate these lies that folks try to keep alive. I often, honestly wonder if they do this to keep people needing them. You know, kind of like Communism creates a need in the people so that they woould never rise up against the bad guys for fear of their needs not being met. Is that weird? I think you know what I am trying to say….
Yep, Proud, I understand fully. You know what I think. The reason why they do that is two fold. One is because they don’t read. They take what is said and since “Bobby O’Jay said it”, it is true. That stuff empowers people like Bobby O’Jay, and he really thinks that he is a demogod or something. If people just used the internet for reading stuff to get the whole picture, and then form an opinion, people like the mayor and Bobby O’Jay would not have a platform to stand on.
Another thing is change. People are afraid of change. If they changed their thinking, they will be ok. There is a book that has been out for at least 7 years called, “Who Moved My Cheese.” I read that book, took me a better part of a afternoon. When I was done, it changed my thinking about a lot of things. One reason why I moved is because I needed to change my friends. Once I changed friends, my attitude changed. Once my attitude changed, my finaces increased and so on and so on.
People have to stop depending on the media as far as what they say and research what is said, before forming an opinion.

Because I have a 60+ year old mother and father that still live there and others that knew growing up. There are babies there of all races.
Look, there is a case in Denver right now, where 2 guys killed a guy and wonded his cousin at a Fourth of July picnic a couple of years ago. The one guy that was wounded was and African American guy who was getting married in a year and plus he just graduated from Colorado State University. He was going to court to testify against the three men that killed the other guy. He stood for something.
He did get killed and the three that he was testifying against are up for a tripple murder. That young man stood up for what he believed. Two of the guys were convicted in the first murder and got 103 years a piece because of the one guy who stood his ground and even in death achieve his goal. He stood for something.
I am not scared of anything or fear anyone but God. If I “snitch” and I get killed, then it was my time and God wanted me to come home, and I believe that he will be proud that his “son” stood for something.

You want to know whats funny. Remember the Ice storm of 94? That was my last winter in Memphis. You remember that they closed the city down for about a week. The next year, I was out here, and I had to go to work. My supervisor was cool and she knew that all I knew was from and was not used to snow.
Anyway, it was about 4″ on the ground when the phone in my room rang. She asked me to look out the window and see if I saw any buses running. I was living downtown at the YMCA. I looked out and was shocked. People were getting around like normal and busses were running on time!

Channel 5 is the only station not showing the website. I think its very tacky to show the family upset about the pics and then the news stations including NEWS CHANNEL 3 “On Your Side” pimping this guys website and smacking the family in the face. Yep, seeing amateur “journalists” like Matthews makes you appreciate the “real” media. I know the Commercial Appeal and the local TV news aren’t perfect, but at least they adhere to some ethics. Thaddeus Matthews is without ethics and without morals. And I really hope this is the end of him.
P.S. If anyone know the family of Shindri Roberson, please advice them to also include Google in any lawsuit against Matthews and N.J. Ford. I know I personally have sent about three complaints to Google about his blog, and I’ve flagged it several times. He has violated the law in this case and others, and in several other instances he has also violated the Google Terms of Service, including posting libelous material, pornography, personal information (e.g. social security numbers), and other autopsy photos. Google has been made aware several times that he is in violation of the terms of service and the law, and they have taken no action whatsoever. They’re also very liable.
I also have flagged the Misfit’s site and reported his violation of the Terms of Service of Google – they don’t allow porn and he regularly posts it. He believes he is above the law. Also, he has never made a single contribution to society but take up oxygen from someone else more deserving.

Fly on the Wall, I know all your various personalities and your feelings about Memphis and most of its citizens; they’re well documented. I am here to appeal to your sensibilities about Thaddeus Matthews. While I disagree with you on just about every issue, I think one thing we agree about is our disgust with TM. He is on the brink now, with most people in the city turning against him, including local black leaders, black citizens, the media and the law.
But when you go to his site and post all those hateful, racist remarks and epithets, you make Thaddeus Matthews look better. It convinces some people that he is under attack just because of the color of his skin. Your many efforts to discredit and expose him fall on deaf ears when you throw in bigotry and hatred.
Please, just cool it for a few days. I always figured Thaddeus Matthews would be his own undoing, and now it’s time to just let things take their course. There are efforts underway by some pretty powerful people to put an end to all the horrible things TM has been getting away with for years, and I can’t imagine that you want to interfere.
If you continue to go to that site and post all your hateful messages, I can only conclude that you are no better than Thaddeus Matthews and like him will go to any lengths for attention. I know how hard you’ve worked to discredit TM, and when that blog is removed you can go to every site in Memphis and claim victory. But for now, please don’t put an end to what’s already in motion. I was born and raised in Hickory Hill. I now get physically ill looking at what has become of my childhood stomping grounds. Leaving Memphis is not white flight… it is a simple demonstration of common sense.

Philadelphia, PA… Every race, religion and nationality lives here.

Houston, TX… Mostly Caucasian and Hispanic maybe 15% Black… Crime is… once again much lower than Memphis.

His goose is cooked over those pictures. I have not a doubt about that.
I’ll also tell you why he put his blog under constant moderation. It’s one of two reasons, which both transpired on the same day. He clamped down as soon as he was #1; “outed” for getting his 4th citation for driving while license revoked in a 2 1/2 year period … or 2; the outing of his new “weasel hole” at 5300 Marissa Cove, after his eviction from the rental next door to Godwin. Seems the Marissa Cove property is owned by a “tote the note” low income housing operation, which is owned by “Affordable Management”, which, in turn, is owned by one Bruce Wring. Bruce Wring was mentioned on Matthews blog a while back as having a link to Dennis Churchwell, who thud was beating up on for evicting E Ford out of his funeral home.. Those two “observations” were posted about a week ago on his blog.
Thud deleted those posts as fast as his fat fingers would allow him to. THEN, he immediately went to approving all posts. His new interest in editing all posts was because of those tidbits of information … and, for no “altuistic” motive as he would have his readers believe.
Man oh man! Thursday I was out on my motorcyle and at one time while working in the yard, broke out in a sweat!
Now on this Saturday morning……just about an inch and a half of snow.

Fly, you are correct when you say that Thad Matthews started his moderation when people started posting the TRUTH about his dirty deeds. It appears that Matthews can dish it out but cannot take it.
He spends his waking hours detailing the laws that everyone else is breaking yet he breaks laws all of the time. The sick part is the people who excuse and try to defend his behavior.
As I recall, Thaddeus Matthews went to comment moderation because one person was posting dozens, possibly hundreds, of comments on there every day–overly long, drawn out, repetitive, irrelevant and uninteresting messages that many people complained about. When I go back and read old topics, I can see that Thaddeus Matthews allowed people to criticize him and post his criminal record for months, but did not go into comment moderation until that one person, in the words of Thaddeus Matthews, “WENT OFF THE DEEP END.” In fact, for a couple of years people could go on that site and challenge everything the despicable Thaddeus Matthews said and inform people who visited that blog of the truth, until one day someone ruint the free exchange of ideas by abusing it.
A Thaddeus Matthews comment on the subject of comment moderation said, “news hound You were the reason for this decision hope you find yourself a home.” It is followed by many more comments from various readers and critics thanking Thaddeus Matthews for eliminating the news hound from the blog. What does it say about the news hound that so many people despise him even more than the despicable Thaddees Matthews?

Gonna be tough for people to get to the game with all this snow. I planned to stay home and watch it on TV anyway (no tickets), but I hope there’s a good turnout. UAB pretty much knows they have to beat the Tigers today or, if the two teams meet again, in the conference tourney to make it to the NCAAs. They should really be gunning for us, especially after they lost in Birmingham in that shocker. I hope Joey Dorsey really steps up today. It’s senior day, and plus, he could use a big confidence boost going into post-season play. He was playing so well earlier in the season and I think his recent woes are mental. If he played well in the Tennesse game, I think we would have won. He could really stand to do some kind of meditation to keep his head straight and his temper in check.

Son stabs father to save sister
50-year-old Rosemark man killed while choking daughter

A Rosemark boy has apparently committed an act of tragic heroism: killing his father to save his sister.
Larry Williams was choking his 19-year-old daughter Thursday night when his 15-year-old son intervened, stabbing him in the back, according to a release from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
Williams is the brother of former firefighter Frederick Williams, who shot and killed his wife, two fellow firefighters and a sheriff’s deputy eight years ago today.
Frederick Williams was found not guilty by reason of insanity and returned to a secure state mental hospital.
Larry Williams was killed just before 8p.m. at the family’s home, 9110 McCreight.
The two-year-old house is on two acres in the Partridge Ridge subdivision, near the intersection of Brunswick and Mudville roads.
The 50-year-old Williams and his daughter had been arguing when Williams began choking her, family members told investigators.
The boy tried to stop the attack, and when Williams continued, the boy stabbed him with a kitchen knife.
Deputies found Williams’ body in the living room.
Relatives told investigators that Williams had also choked his daughter three weeks ago, but they did not report the attack then.
A Shelby County grand jury will review the circumstances of the stabbing, but the Sheriff’s Department does not anticipate charging the boy.
“Investigators believe Williams’ son acted to protect his sister and other family members,” the release states.
Williams was employed at Cummins Diesel Recon on Pershing in Binghamton.
He was charged with DUI in 1989 and 1990.

One critically injured in Blackhaven club shooting
7:59 a.m., March 8, 2008
Memphis police are investigating a shooting at a local club that left one man critically injured at The Med this morning.
Police responded to the call at the New York New York club at 2080 Brooks Rd. shortly after 3:00.
Gunfire was exchanged outside the club during a fight, Lt. Doreen Shelton of Memphis Felony Response said.
Police are still interviewing witnesses and have no suspects in custody.
Anyone with information about this crime that can help investigators is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH.

I agree with you man. Crime is at an all time high in Memphis. I believe it is because the leadership in Memphis has brought nothing to the table but frustrated, bought off policing. I believe that the mayor is part of an organized force to keep the criminals ON the streets. In that way, people are focused on the crime and not on the back dealings that goes on at City Hall.
Like you, I remember Hickory Hill back in the 80’s and 90’s. I remember a Mall that had ice skating. Under Mayor Hackett, it looked like Memphis was on its way back up. But with this current mayor, everything that was beautiful east of Lamar looks like a war zone. I don’t live in Memphis anymore, but when I come to visit my family that lives there, Memphis looks “tired”.

I think moving away from Memphis has given you a new and unique perspective on this city and race relations. I hope that those who are still here don’t get so mired in mistrusting and hating one another that we can’t work together for the benefit of all of Memphis. I dream that one day we can all live in harmony, different races working side by side for the common good, all neighbors in a city we can all be proud of. To get us moving down that path, we need strong, moral, fearless leadership, but we are sorely lacking in that area. Herenton has proven that he would much rather divide than unite us. I can only hope that in the next mayoral election someone like AC Wharton will run for mayor. He has unilateral support among local people of all races, ages, backgrounds, economic c-l-a-s-s-e-s and political parties, because he has shown that he is a person who cares about this community and can be trusted to do what’s in the best interest of the area as a whole. He’s not afraid to be unpopular, but he’s also not so stubborn that he refuses to listen to his constituents and change when it’s necessary.
Anyway, thanks for always giving us your thoughts on your former and our current hometown. They’re useful and heartening to us in so many ways.

I am at work so I look back from time to time. Yes, Kate, moving away from Memphis was one of the most painful thing that I had done at that time. But, seeing something else different was the best thing that has happend to me.
I was just like a member of Bobby O’Jay’s flock. Always blaming “The Man” for everything. One thing moving from Memphis has done is having me to look at me. It changed me to see people of all races getting along. So I know that it can be achieved.
I know that the mayor does not care about Memphis. Sure, Downtown has changed, and the major projects are gone, but he should not get credit for that. He was more interested in building a new stadium, than building a new school or making the streets safer. Downtown and tearing down the projects is call Urban Renewal, in which a lot of cities was doing in the 90’s and even now. That is a competition thing, not a mayor thought up thing.
I used to go to the same church with AC and his 3 sons and I know that he is a good man. But, you know, Memphis has to judge a man or a woman by their character and not his skin tone. Memphis needs a make-over and I pray that it happens. You will see me talk about this until they turn The Rant off. It is time for people like Kate, Proud, TJ, Whitey and myself on this blog to make this city better. We may not agree on a lot of things, but you know, it is always good to disagree with respect to others.
I still love Memphis and wish I can come back, but the thing that keeps me just visting, is the lack of jobs, and the lack of civil service that Memphians put up with. This is already happening, notice the growing number of Indian (East Indian) faces and Asian faces moving here because of FedEx. Sooner or later these professionals will put their stamp on Memphis.

I read PEBs posts and I feel sad, he wishes for a return to some glory days I can’t imagine or reflect on, my glory days are ahead. Hickory Hill is a wonderful place that has suffered from a lack of vision and city planning. With the right local leadership all these neighborhoods can be transformed rather easily.
Using race is a tool to control people, like any other tool those that exploit it don’t care about the long-term effect, just their immediate needs. Don’t buy into the hype.
When the people are ready a hero will come. Right now though they are just not ready for that. Soon though…very soon.

I also want Memphis to return to it’s better days. I was born and raised in Memphis and left there in 1990 because of a divorce. I located to N MS at the Batesville MS area. I love it here even though MS almost always comes out last in some survey where all states are involved. We also have our share of crime, shoplifting, smoking crack, no driver’s license etc…but not the violent crime like the big cities.
Hopefully one day the citizens of Memphis will get their ‘home town’ back and they should start with the mayor’s office. Maybe get Prince Mongo to run again? LOL!!

Out of all due respect for you because I like what you write in this blog, I just want to explain something to you. I do remember a time that Hickory Hill was a fantastic place to be. When I was young, I wanted to move there. However, when I was speaking of Hickory Hill, I was not longing for the good ole times to come back. I was speaking about taking that area that was built and was a good place to be, and turning it to a better place than it was before.
The one thing I do understand is change. I know that a place back in the 90’s is just that, and I realize that change (weather good or bad) will eventually happen. When I am there and drive down American-Way, I do remember what is was, and I don’t think that it had to be the way it is now. That area between Lamar and Mendenhall was a great shopping area. But now, it looks tired. Nothing has been invested in it. The change was not a good change, and my question is, why did the city government have to let this happen. It is just like your house, if you don’t take care of it, it will get and look tired.
All I am saying is that the current administration ruined a up and coming city in 17 or so years. I don’t want the city to look so tired. My wife is from Denver and when she comes to Memphis, she doesn’t talk about the crime, she talks about how tired Memphis looks. She says it looks beat up. The residents did that. I remember when it looked fresh, or maybe when I left it looked fresh to me, I don’t know.
There are some beautiful areas in Memphis, but Memphis needs a make-over and I will not make excuses for it. Like I said, Hickory Hill was one beautiful area at one time. The Mid-American Mall and the surroundings when it was built was a great shopping area. Last I was there, it was a dirt fill and they had burried someone there. The administration has to be changed.

PEB, I can’t speak on what it once was. You want to see tired cities with crumbling infrastructure go north (I do every other month). I’m HAPPY to come back here, compared to Newark, NYC, Boston and many other places this is a paradise. It may not be what it once was, but I see fresh canvas to paint on. Housing is plentiful, the schools need work as does the business community, but it IS happening.
Asians and other cultures are taking notice of the large number of open spaces to build and grow businesses. You also have little to no organized crime, which helps businesses to grow and flourish. It WILL happen, just not as fast as many would like.
Even I have been tempted to open a hot dog stand here, though why there aren’t any in town is beyond me, us NYers love a good dog and they are pretty scarce here.
I watched NYC go through this in the 70’s and 80’s, white flight triggered an emptying of neighborhoods and businesses followed. Now with taxation being equalized, they are fighting to get back. Take careful notice of what’s going on in Harlem as the same elements of change are starting to form here. For me this is deju-vu, and it’s interesting to go through it all again, but I KNOW what’s on the other side and I can tell you a new day is coming.

I just wanted to throw an observation in here. I love east Indian food and Chinese (gotta lay off both too fattening LOL). Anyway, I have watched both of these people groups when you go in and eat. Notcie sometime, if you haven’t already, that when you pay for your food not one of them ever rings up the mount on the cash register (if there is one). That tells me one BIG thing. They aren’t claiming all of their sales and paying the sales tax they charge you and should be paying. then comes the income tax, they probably arent paying it either.
My point is, I actually have pretty much stopped eating in their restaurants for that very reason. I work hard and pay all my taxes, they should too. But, granted I have no proof. I just know how the “cash” business runs on the taxes and all. Been there done that before.

I have never been futher than Cleveland to the east coast. I did see a documentary on VH-1 on New York in 1977. And your right, the way Memphis looks now is nothing to compare to the east coast. So I see your point.
Has anyone heard Herenton publically speak on the progress of his “Plan of Action” for controlling MCS school violence? Have the detectors been installed? are they all working and consistently in use? A topic as important as this should have more follow up for the citizens of Memphis!
The only thing I’ve heard from Herenton was when the nation heard once again of the war zone that is Memphis, and Herenton returned from his Fantasy Island to basically state “that nothing can be done about the crime”.
Dr. Herenton all is not lost! Any person, anytime, can turn their lives around. YOU can strive to reclaim the promise you had when FIRST elected! I encourage you to go for it!

I’ve got to agree with the above posts calling for our mayor to speak out in times of great distress in the city and to put together a coalition of talent to come up with some ideas on problem solving.
If the mayor can’t handle proactive leadership then do like AC and announce that we have no idea how to solve this problem and want your input (regarding inability of the county to balance budget without raising property taxes).
I’ll never forgive Memphis mayor (can’t say my mayor, as I’m a white city resident) for playing the race card last election and calling the white community as a whole, racist/haters for not supporting him and the horrific death spiral that our city has been in.
Where are the plans? The coalitions for solutions? The call to arms? The call for unity? These are things a true leader does!
AND what is this about lowering his salary to $150,000. You mean he’s making more than three times the amount of three body guard/interns and gets to work from an island and not make appearance or engage the community?

I never hear from our “so-called” mayor unless it’s days after some horrible devastation and everyone OTHER person in the world has spoken on it. Does he live in this community or does he really reside on an island somewhere and just flies in for the Griz. games?
The $50,000 that Gov. Bredesen pledged to Crimestoppers for information on the Lester St. murders–he did do at the behest of AC Wharton and D.A. Bill Gibbons. Why didn’t Herenton do something like this?
Also, if you get a chance, please go to the Commercial Appeal web site and leave a message for the families of the murder victims and for the surviving children. These people have been through so much this week, and those poor children will have a lifetime of nightmares and other problems to deal with. Let’s let them know that Memphis and the surrounding area is thinking of and praying for them.

On Asian And Indian Business
I’ll say this, these cultures may be new to many of you, but not to me. I grew up knowing how to use chopsticks and smelling curry. I’ll just say this; one of the biggest failings of Americans is that we just cannot wrap our minds around the fact that there are some cultures and business practices dating back thousands of years. The Asian and Indian way of doing business have been practiced longer than America has been around and really haven’t changed much from the ancient times.
Let’s just say that getting around government regulation is a skill that has deep roots in some cultures. Corruption, graft, extortion and the black market are viewed as the cost of doing business to our Asian brothers and sisters, not as crime.

During this week back in 1836, the Alamo fell. For more than 13 days, 186 brave and determined patriots withstood Santa Anna’s seasoned army of over 4,000 troops. To a man, the defenders of that mission fort knew they would never leave those ramparts alive. They had several opportunities to leave and live. Yet, they chose to fight and die. How foolish they must look to this generation of spoiled Americans.
It is difficult to recall that stouthearted men such as Davy Crockett (a nationally known frontiersman and former Congressman), Will Travis (only 23 years old with a little baby at home), and Jim Bowie (a wealthy landowner with properties on both sides of the Rio Grande) really existed. These were real men with real dreams and real desires. Real blood flowed through their veins. They loved their families and enjoyed life as much as any of us. There was something different about them, however. They possessed a commitment to liberty that transcended personal safety and comfort.
Liberty is an easy word to say, but it is a hard word to live up to. Freedom has little to do with financial gain or personal pleasure. Accompanying Freedom is her constant and unattractive companion, Responsibility. Neither is she an only child. Patriotism and Morality are her sisters. They are inseparable; destroy one and all will die.
Early in the siege, Travis wrote these words to the people of Texas: “Fellow Citizens & Compatriots: I am besieged by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna. . . . The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise the garrison are to be put to the sword . . . I have answered the demand with a cannon shot & our flag still waves proudly from the walls. I shall never surrender or retreat. . . . VICTORY OR DEATH! P.S. The Lord is on our side. . . .”
As you read those words, remember that Travis and the others did not have the A.C.L.U., P.E.T.A., People for the un-American Way, and the National Education A.s.s.o.c.i.a.t.i.o.n telling them how intolerant and narrow-minded their notions of honor and patriotism were. A hostile media did not constantly castigate them as a bunch of wild-eyed extremists. As school children, they were not taught that their forefathers were nothing more than racist jerks.
The brave men at the Alamo labored under the belief that America (and Texas) really was “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” They believed God was on their side and that the freedom of future generations depended on their courage and resolve. They further believed their posterity would remember their sacrifice as an act of love and devotion. It all looks pale now.
By today’s standards, the gallant men of the Alamo appear rather foolish. After all, they had no chance of winning–none. However, the call for pragmatism and practicality was never sounded. Instead, they answered the clarion call, “Victory or death!”
Please try to remember the heroes of the Alamo as you watch our gutless political and religious leaders surrender to compromise and political correctness. Try to recall the time in this country when ordinary men and women had the courage of their convictions and were willing to sacrifice their lives for freedom and independence.
One thing is certain: those courageous champions at the Alamo did not die for a political party or for some “lesser of two evils” mantra. They fought and died for a principle, and that principle was liberty and independence. So did the men at Lexington and Concord. That is our heritage.
Today, however, our national leaders are in the process of turning America over to the very forces that the Alamo defenders gave their lives resisting. On second thought, do they look foolish, or do we?
Way to go Mr. Whitey! You hit that sucker out of the park!
I love history and appreciate you taking the time to honor our national heroes of the Alamo.
I feel there are still a lot of heroes in this country that struggle daily to do what is right, though it not be politically correct or easy. The majority of our armed forces come to mind. Principled Heroes putting their lives on the line for freedom for others. The Teachers in MCS and other school systems that have not given up and show up and “put up” every day in sometimes overwhelming scenarios (I’m sure there is a local politician or two that is not crooked or jaded, but they are not honored in the media).
I think we got away from honoring and focusing on these heroic traits of humanity because of the very sacrifices made by our forebearers. Due to the efforts of the greatest generation (exterminating the Nazis) and those who fought the Cold War(how soon we forget that just 40 years ago we had to contend with Communism’s push for Global Domination and to end our way of life!)the rest of us had the easiest lives in the history of mankind.
Growing up in the nuclear American Family with McDonalds, Looney Tunes, Rock and Roll, NFL, Twinkies, we were consumers and voyeurs to the highest degree. Food, gas, entertainment was all abundant and we were provided for. Our parents almost did too good a job. We lost track of some of the important things in life as we were occupied with all these “conveniences” and had it a little too easy.
Thanks for the reminder! Folks be grateful! This is still America, and we can all choose to take a stand and make a difference!

Grants for foreigners starting businesses? I have heard this rumor many years and frankly have yet to see anyone provide any proof of any grant that a foreigner has gotten, from our government, to start a business.
If you are familiar with how Asian and Indian businesses operate you would probably understand that they wouldn’t participate in programs like this anyway, it’s not their way and frankly they don’t trust government anyway, at least not like we do. They self finance, which is a way of doing business counter to the way we think here. They pool money, then finance each other from that pool.
Once in business they supply and bank with each other, keeping their money circulating within their communities. You haven’t seen it on a large scale yet but once the Indians start in real estate here you’re REALLY gonna be pissed. The last time America saw interlocking conglomerates like this was during the time of the railroad barons. What will look like 4 or 5 separate companies will actually be one large one joined by family or village ties. They will all work in unison to drive you out of business, then divvy up the market between them.
The only ethnic group that I am aware of that got an incentive like this were Russians in the 80’s, and Vietnamese in the late 70’s. I have heard that some local city and state governments, particularly in the north midwest, offer incentives to come here to help with farming. A co-worker was telling me that Montana and ND in particular were hurting from the closing of Air Force bases, which were causing people to leave for bigger cities, thus depopulating whole areas and towns. In order to keep congressional seats they have reached out to Somalia and Ethiopians to help maintain the farming industries. Imagine that, Somalian farmers in Montana!

ExPat, that is fine on this. We agree to disagree a bit. I would submit this to you, however. When the Vietnamese came here after we fought to free them they were indeed granted to start fresh. One case in point of the need not do this is that when they came here they bought up all the old tubs down on the gulf coast and fished (shrimping and such) 24/7 and caught anything and everything in their nets and threw nothing back. OH required by law too there. Anyway, you coud not and still can’t go down there and deep sea fish or shrimp and catch much of anything due to their greed and breaking the law.
You can tell me about these all self funding asians and indians till you’re blue in the face. I still maintain the governemnt is funding them in addition the family funding. They sack it all away and then loan it to eachother. The problem with some of that is a thing called the Asian Mafia.
Now, when the government allows these Indians and Asians to buy up everything you will be groveling to them for a 2 bit job along with most of us that are doing our jobs by the law and above board.
I for one OPPOSE that totally in this land of the free and the home of the brave. Of course that is waining a great deal now anyway.
I do hope these guys and girls that come back from Iraqi freedom and Afganistan get MUCH more respect than the Vietnam vets. Thank them when you see them. Also, these new vets.

A Southaven youth was shot and killed Saturday night following a fight on the parking lot of the Southaven Performing Arts Center, where he was attending a church-sponsored dance.
Dexter Harris, 16, the son of Charles McDaniel, was shot once in the upper chest and once in the left leg. He died at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis less than an hour after he was shot between 10 and 11 p.m., marking the city’s first homicide of the year.

North Memfrica Stabbing
Memfrica, TN – Memfrica police are investigating a Sunday afternoon stabbing in North Memfrica.
Police say it happened just before noon, Sunday, March 9, 2008, in the 1100 block of Lexington Circle.
According to investigators, two black women were fighting when one stabbed the other in the head.
The injured woman was taken to the Med in non-critical condition and is expected to be okay.
There is no word yet on what charges the accused stabber will face.

I mentioned to a lady at church yesterday that they need to fry the brother or put him in Max. and accidentally let out the word that he killed kids and we wouldn’t have to house him long. She made a good point, then their mom would have 2 sons dead.
I agree with another that they should take these children away from this family and put them with a family to raise them that have some sense and morals.

I watch too many of those crime shows myself! On the CA comments, there are numerous people who believe that Jessie Dotson had an accomplice. They also mention mutilations, etc. Really, the only mutilations I’ve read about in the legitimate media is the poor child who had part of his fingers cut off. But isn’t that consistent with defensive wounds (my CSI training convinces me it is). If he was trying to fend off his uncle’s knife attack, wouldn’t he have possibly tried to grab the knife with his hands?
And it’s obvious that the police were 100-percent correct in placing the surviving children in protective custody and keeping the family in the dark about the condition of the children. Had any family members known which children were injured and/or killed, that information would likely have been p*a*s*s*e*d on to Jessie Dotson. Plus, family members might have tried to influence the children on what to say to the police. I don’t mean to impugn other family members, but I think the police were correct in taking every precaution to protect the children and make sure no one tainted their statements.
While the statement of the nephew implicated the uncle, the police and the actions they took helped solved this case. The police will continue to build a case against that monster, and we need the judge and prosecutors to do their part to make sure Jessie Dotson is never able to harm another soul.

I just received a call from Steve Cohen. I had called his office Friday to complain about Cohen’s ad on that despicable web site where the photos of Shindri Roberson were posted. He called me back personally to say that it was not a paid advertisement but a link to his campaign website, and he denounced the jerk who posted those pictures and said he thought it was very wrong.
Anyway, I’ve really be impressed by Steve Cohen since he’s been in Congress. He’s not only active in Washington and a great amba-s-s-ador to the city, he also remains active in his home community. He recently hosted a seminar in Memphis on home foreclosures and how to avoid them, plus I got an email from him recently explaining in detail the TV switch to digital and how to get a rebate for a converter, and then today I get a personal phone call from him. While I’m sure many people don’t like the fact that he’s a liberal, you have to give him credit for being an accessible public servant who works tirelessly on behalf of his constituents.
WREG, please keep us informed of the investigation of the crime that Thaddidiot Matthews committed at the Ford Funeral Home.

I agree with you about the Fords being largely responsible. They had a duty to the family of Shindri Roberson to protect the body of that young woman, they have a duty to the state of Tennessee to abide by the law, and they have an ethical responsibility as a funeral home. Matthews should have never been allowed access to that part of the funeral home. I can just about guarantee he will never be allowed on the property again. But the funeral home should have their license suspended for their failure to live up to their responsibilities. It would be nice, though, if they could prove that Matthews trespa-s-sed and have him jailed.
Matthews has somehow convinced many people that he is doing something important and worthwhile, and he unfortunately has garnered some power in this city. Someone inside the police department is giving him information, and I really hope the police department identifies and fires that person or persons soon. It is to the point now where investigations are being compromised by these leaks.
But Thaddeus Matthews also uses some obviously very unreliable sources as well, and you certainly cannot believe everything you read on his blog. Personally, I’ve stopped going there because I think he’s a danger to this community and I don’t want to support his personal vendettas, stream of misinformation and character a-s-sinations. It’s ironic how people think he’s being persecuted, when it is in fact Matthews who has persecuted numerous individuals via his blog.
I am of the opinion that the best thing to do is ignore him, knowing that he will inevitably be the instrument of his own demise. Every person who visits or posts on that blog is aiding and abetting Thaddeus Matthews’ quest for power, fame and money.

I can not believe Crimestoppers and the City of Memphis are not giving the true hero of this tragedy the reward money. This child has suffered and still did the brave thing and told on his Uncle. The reasoning for not giving this child the reward is just STUPID!! This is telling the public if you tell a police officer face to face the information they need to close a case you are not able to get the reward that only if you make a phone call you can get the money. Who came up with this mess? In any case weather you make a phone call or tell the information in person you should be given what is coming to you. That child should be given the reward money with no questions ask, it sounds to me that the MPD and City of Memphis along with Crime stoppers screwed this child out of what is rightfully his. They ALL new if he child did not call crime stoppers then they would not have to give him the reward. This goes to show what many already believe, that the officials in Memphis do not care about the citizens. Someone needs to step up to the plate and do the right thing.

ATHENS, Ga. – There were funeral services in Georgia today for two young women whose lives were tragically cut short by African American men.
In Athens, mourners struggled to understand why someone would kill Eve Carson, a popular University of North Carolina student body president.
Hundreds of people filled the church in Carson’s hometown. Many wore Carolina blue ribbons in her honor.
Carson was found Wednesday on a street about a mile from campus. She had been shot several times. Police are searching for a African American man photographed using her ATM card.
In Marietta, the hometown of slain Auburn University freshman Lauren Burk, a rabbi asked hundreds of people to turn their anger into something positive and let the justice system handle her killer. Burk was found shot on the side of an off-campus road Tuesday night and her burnt car was found in a campus parking lot.
A African American man has been charged in her death.

I am with you on wanting to help these children monetarily and any other way we can, but I think that giving the young boy the Crimestoppers reward would possibly set a bad precedent. Victims should be encouraged to identify their attackers without the incentive of financial reward. Someone else who is the victim of an attempted murder might not be willing to identify the a-s-sailant and instead wait for Crimestoppers to offer a reward before speaking. Ideally, witnesses to and victims of violent crime would tell police what they know without the offer of money. But that is often not the case, and Crimestoppers was set up to garner information on which the police have few or no leads and need information from the public. It was not to encourage the victim to speak out against the perp.
Now, I know it doesn’t really sound fair, because if this boy was indeed the only person alive who could tell police who the murderer is, then he could have just waited until he got well, left the hospital and THEN made the phone call, told them Jessie Dotson did it and collected the reward. But he would have then compromised the case, because he could not testify that his uncle did it, as he would have claimed that he did not know who killed his parents and siblings and tried to kill him. Also, his life would have been in grave danger when he got out of the hospital, as his uncle would have undoubtedly tried again to silence him.
In short, I don’t think Crimestoppers rewards should be given to victims, as they would have to lie to the police on the front end, compromise the case against the perp, risk their lives for the money and also risk someone else making the call first. It’s just a slippery slope to start going down.
Having said that, though, I believe there are other ways the state, county and city can and WILL help these children. I have faith that Bredesen, Wharton and other government officials will find another way to give this brave boy and the other children some money and other support, it just won’t be labeled Crimestoppers money.

This depends on your point of view. I tend to think that government only has YOUR best interest at heart when it coincides with their best interest. As has been pointed out on another board about this subject: if the child is given a reward for identifying the killer, his testimony can and likely will be called into question by the defense. If this child receives $81,000 for implicating and testifying his uncle, the defense attorney will say that the state unduly influenced the boy’s testimony, and the boy’s testimony could be thrown out altogether.
These children should and I believe will receive a great deal of financial help from private citizens, churches, organizations and businesses. But it should not be in the form of a reward for identifying who tried to kill you, and the state and local government should continue to avoid any conflicts of interest or in any way jeopardize the case against Jessie Dotson.

Kinda cool is you ask me. I have no qualms with the sex habits of my politicians, unless they are hypocritical about it. But then I’m for legalizing a few things that are considered taboo. Might as well legalize and tax them rather than have them stimulate the underground economy any further.

Actually, TJ, everyone I know, regardless of skin color, thinks O.J. Simpson was guilty. What made me very sad is that many black people rejoiced at his acquittal not because they thought he was innocent, but because they genuinely felt like the American justice system had screwed black people for so long and that they had finally scored a victory. He was not worthy of being a hero to oppressed people.
But I agree with your point that being declared innocent is not the same as actually being innocent.

For those that have never been there Washington DC probably has the highest number of prostitutes, call-girls, escorts and the like per square mile than any other place I have been.
