There HAS to be something that the city as a whole can do to make him stay true to his word of resigning. For the sake of the city and the children he DOES NOT need to be in office.
I read someone say and I have to agree that this feels like he is holding the city hostage or somthing, if I dont get the MCS super job then I dont wanna resign and will continue to fuel the racial devide and promote violence within the city……..WTF is that

This went from the best day in Memphis to the worst day since Silly Willy made it into office to begin with.
Unfortunately, the letter that he wrote to the CAO only said he “intended” to resign. Kind of reminds me when he promised to resign if the county and city schools consolidated. Since that didn’t happen we were stuck with him. He is no longer effective and his choices in appointees to key positions in the city obviously leave a great deal to be desired. I do hope they offer him the position becuase us citizens could truly use a break from the stupidity in city hall. Oh wait, that won’t work because then it will be stupidity running our schools. I thought our kids were in enough trouble now they will be royally messed over if he runs the school.

Let him deal with his indictments while in his current position. That will be the real news story to report when (not if) it happens. He can choose to resign at that time.

Here’s a thought for everyone to ponder … first, put on your best thinking caps.
NOTHING is going to help academic performance, or decorum, much at MCS, even a super hizzhonor … and here’s why:
Way back when hizzhonor became MCS Super, the system was about 50/50 black/White. Perhaps, even a higher % of whites.
It’s about 90/10 now. In the “way back when” era, the academic performance of the white students held up the stats for the system, as a whole, and things didn’t appear to be too awfully bad.
That “support” isn’t present any longer, and doesn’t bolster the numbers anymore. Thus, the entire system performs terribly, in any metric you choose to use.
You may not like the portrayal, but it’s very true!

Silly Willy ran the schools into the ground, then proceeded to do the same for the whole city – and now he’s throwing a temper tantrum and saying if he doesn’t get what he wants, he’ll hold his breath until he turns blue? Fine. Treat him like the 2-year-old he’s acting like: Put him to bed without supper, and let him scream out his tantrum until he cries himself to sleep… This man knows NOTHING about honor – you know, the basic premise of keeping your word?!

There are soooooooooooooo many reasons to dislike and distrust Willie Herenton. For most of us in Memphis who continue to be burned by this egomaniac, his race has nothing to do with it.
While the school board might earnestly listen to some of his proposals (he might actually have a few good ideas), there’s no way they should give any serious consideration to hiring him as superintendent again. Anyone who would hold the city and our public schools hostage like this has no business being in “public service.”

PEB, Herenton has taken great pains to insulate himself from any criticism whatsoever. Several people on the CA message board have correctly pointed out that he is displaying narcissistic traits. One tendency of marcissism is to dismiss anyone who doesn’t “reflect” your own grandiose image of yourself. Thus, he’s sure that if you criticize him in any way you’re merely a “hater” who doesn’t deserve his attention. Only those who admire and praise him are worthy of his time and effort.
I am really beginning to believe that he suffers from this or some other sort of mental disorder, as this is very irrational behavior.

Even if he gets the job, he has until July 31 to put into motion his plans to close libraries and community centers in the neighborhoods that need them the most or he can raise property taxes to keep them open. Herenton needs to be put out to pasture and the gates locked.. I think the governor should be able to step in and bring him down. This has got to be the most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen in Memphis. Some have even suggested that the governor of the state needs to “step in and bring him down”. Really? And, what crime has he committed? Is he the head of some organized crime racket? As far as I can tell, none of you have offered a legitimate reason for him to be forced out of office. Then too, crime is everywhere. There is no city or locale that is crime-free. He may rescind his resignation; so what? I guess if one of you resigns from a job in hopes of getting another one (but are uncertain you will get this other job), you would keep your resignation from your old job intact. A suggestion as to the “in and out” mayor’s motives. If he is convicted while in office for his many self serving but illegal activities he will loose his pension for the mayor’s job. He will get the $60,000 per year(approximately) for his previous employment at MCS even though he didn’t really earn it. He got booted after the school system had to pay millions to the women he sexually abused and harrassed that were his employees and this was part of his severence. He probably has financial issues, I believe due to the real estate market and his investments there. Even with the $50,000 “gift” from his friend who also got no bid contracts from the city in return. I don’t think any good will come from him staying on as mayor. Why would things change. And, it certainly is clear that you don’t bring back the thief that stole from you before. That is unless you are like the mayor who likes to surround himself with felons. In memphis you cant go trick-o-treating anymore, you cant let the kids outside to play anymore, literally you have to look behind you 3 times for every 1 step you take.
The crime and violence that has taken over memphis as a whole has just about killed the city and the one person we as the poeple put into office to curb these issues is RACIST, arrogant, shows no regard to the city or its people, very unstable in everything he does and this last incident does nothing but solidify that fact.
Bottom line he needs to get out, be it on his terms or someone over his head push him out the door. If not, then Memphis is stuck in the state it is in at the present moment and will continue to watch its tax payers leave the city and crime and violence kill off the rest.

Of course, I don’t live in the Mid-South anymore. I moved some years ago, but my parents live in Whitehaven. They are both born and raised there. I just couldn’t take looking for employment there. I left in 1995. It is 2008, and I don’t see any change. Actually, I see more division. Here are some points that I am talking about.
1. The mayor was elected in 1991. Nothing has changed. More jobs have left the metro area. Crime has increased there where crime has been on the decrease nationally. The murder rate has been in the top 5 for the past three years. This reflects totally on the mayor’s office.
2. This mayor has more harm than good in the community. Now, I know that you have some people blogging on this that I try not to waste my time in answering. But there are some that have pretty good points. They are Caucasians, and they are only stating that they are seeing there city in pearl. Most of them may be a little harsh, but in dialog with some of these people, they are not racist. They are people that are angry and does not understand why such a support for this mayor.
3. This mayor is more racist than you think. I think that some of the things that come out of his mouth about the white community should have gotten him impeached! Think about it. You don’t like it when “Bigots” defame blacks, then why support this man in what he says about the white community? Is he justified? No, because he is supposed to be a leader and should not let racism come out the way he does. He is no better than the Klan!

So, what happened … well, they began to accumulate college credits for “catch up” high school coursework. I actually spoke with Governor Bredeson via email and he says he has never once been approached by Herenton on that subject. He said he would welcome the communication but said our mayor would not….
So, in all your support of Herenton and his administration I suggest you demand better from him. If you live in Memphis YOU should be outraged and demand cange. If YOU would spend as much time working with guys like Cohen to lobby for change as you spend on here, YOU could be productive.

For one thing, we do not want to end up like California. A full 25% of that state’s budget goes to ails and prisons. The end result. No real reduction in crime. It fell initially, but after two years, crime was on the rise again. Why? Becasue some of the reasons for crime were not addressed. Criminals should be punished; that goes without saying. But, what should be done with them after they’ve served their time? More often than not, ex-cons face a lifetime of stigma. Many of them are retroactively punished by society by way of not being able to find work, housing, etc.
Also, prison overcorwding is a major problem in all the states. With tougher laws and longer sentences comes sardine like conditions for many jails and prisons across this country. So, some states have been court-ordered to relieve prison and jail overcrowding by releasing some prisoners earlier than expected, which in turn makes the streets less safe for all of us.

Further, another problem with the incarceration rate in this country is that prisoners are getting older. Older prisoners mean more expensive medical needs. Unfortunately, it is up to taxpayers to feed, house, clothe, and pay the medical expenses of prisoners. The fact of the matter is, building more prisons usually encourages judges to fill them. That means that, rather than a non-violent offender going to a diversion program, they usually people go to jail. While there, they learn how to be better criminals. Some do better themselves while incarcerated, but most do not. Prison life teaches people to be more aggressive and more violent. Should prisons be abolished? Absolutely not! True, somehwere between 10-25% of people behind bars are innocent of the crimes of which they have been convicted. However, that also means that around 75% -90% of the people behind bars did it.
So, my question to you is, how much of the state’s budget…your taxpayer dollars…are you willing to fork over for more jails and prisons? I also neglected to mention that prison guards and staff have to be compensated for their services. Finally, executing a prisoner is actually more expensive that putiing him/her behind bars for life. This is due to the legal fees created by automatic appeals. Streamlining the appeal process sounds good, but the Innocene Project has helped over 200 falsely convicted people get off of death row. Is that what you want?
I would be willing to pay anything to build more prisons, jails. Our tax money would be well spent then.

Many of us do not trust whites, due to all the things that have happened in the past. To tell people to just “get over the past” is ridiculous, a slap in the face, and white angst against Herenton comes across to many of us more like jealousy and bigotry.
As Obama put it, whites have seen the abuses of affirmative action and other levelling legislation. In some cases, there anger is real and understandable. Black anger at slavery, Jim Crow, racial oppression and disenfranchisement is real. The first step in bridging the gap is to realize that both sides have legitimate gripes, and that some of these gripes are absurd. Which ones are legitimate, and which ones are ridiculous…I could not begin to answer that.

Quick reading here. One thing you do not want in Memphis is to increase the powers of prisons and police unchecked. Trust me, once you put that type of machinery in place it will never go away, only get larger. You do not want to turn Memphis into a police state unless you are willing to accept all the problems that go along with that. Police, unchecked, have a nasty habit of turning corrupt, and once that happens your problems only increase, not decrease (*ahem* New Orleans). No matter where you live this type of crime (police corruption) WILL touch you.
Solving crime has to be a combination of making it socially unacceptable and penalties.

This is making the a#ssumption that they actually stay in jail. These days the only sentences that keep people in jail long-term are capital crimes. The crimes you refer to in the rest of your post traditionally give VERY short or no sentences at all.

Now this is amusing, considering we live in a society where a Bernie Ebbers or Ken Lay, if you add the actual costs, have collectively done more damage to so-called “decent folks” than any 100 petty criminals. Yet for some reason society as a whole gives them a pa!ss or quick forgiveness.

But there’s the appearance of security, and the reality. People here seem to hold the mayor responsible, but you should also hold the DA equally as responsible. The mayor can influence crime, but the DA is the gatekeeper.

I was addressing the silly argument some make about the prohibitive cost of incarceration … as if it’s a “cost benefit” to leave these critters on the streets.
Granted, many of the crimes I refer to are relatively minor. But, if the perp continues to commit the crimes with no real deterrent, and they do, society continues to absorb the costs of their illicit activities.
You’re correct, the limp DA is a big part of the problem. I speak from personal experience of observing his flaccid efforts of ridding Cordova of a well-known drug house. I won’t go into great detail, but suffice it to say over a 5 year period, the scumbag residents (and visitors) were arrested by SCSD & MPD many, many times … for burglaries, a*s*s*aults, possession, endangering the welfare of minors, disorderly conduct, etc … and, spent not one day in jail. Thanks to Gibbons. BTW, the sheriffs & Memphis cops were (and, are) disgusted with his office, too.
Fortunately, when Terry Harris was appointed US Attorney and left Gibbons’ office, things changed. Within a few months there were Federal charges brought, which got it out of Gibbons’ limp hands, and several of the scumbags have been in Federal custody since.
Gibbons is a flaccid panderer who will not enforce the law because of his desire to stay in office. You see … there is such a large “web” of criminal culture in this area, no “law & order” candidate will ever be elected. If one is not a criminal, it’s quite likely they have a relative, or close friend, … or have a “friend who has a friend” … who is a criminal. Of course, they believe they are all being unfairly persecuted.
Back to the original statement … if the laws are strictly enforced, and increasing penalties are levied for continuing offenses … prison terms will become lengthier and one, of two, outcomes will occur.
Behavior will change, or jail time will increase. Either is a BIG plus for the reduced costs of crime, and dwarf the costs of incarceration.

Many people would LIKE to sell, but there are no buyers, Grace. I personally know of two people who just let their houses go in foreclosure and they left Memphis. One has moved to south Mississippi and the other to Tulsa, but both said they had had their respective houses on the market for over two years and no one wanted to move here. The one who moved to Natchez said the only prospective buyer she had was a single mother with SEVEN kids and her only income was welfare…. She said there was no way she could owner-finance so the woman with 7 kids could buy the house, and the buyer was not able to get a mortgage loan anywhere. (Wonder why?!)

One thing that has continually mystified me are the sheer number of people claiming this city is some sort of hellhole, yet continuing to work and draw paychecks from here. If this city is so bad, such a dangerous place then why continue to draw a salary from here? Why not move COMPLETELY, meaning drawing your paycheck from wherever you have moved to? Actually, we had heard he wouldn’t serve his entire term if re-elected long before this newscast said it. We knew he was probably going to resign sometime before the end of his term. We elected him because the people going against him were not qualified to be mayor, in our opinion.
For one thing, the Republicans really did not put up much of a fight for the mayoral seat. Sad, but true. Second, we believe the Gwen Smith scandal, mainly because of the attitude most of you have towards him. King Willie has done it again. He has managed to get the people of Memphis excited, but this time it is with those people that want him GONE. Mayor Herrenton, who sees himself as the one who has saved Memphis from Morris or Chumney, and who sees himself as the only one who can save the school system from some “outsider,” demonstrates a rather pronounced Messiah Complex. He thrives on criticisms and sees them as a kind of persecution that is expected for one having Messiah status. As for the grammar, those double negatives are not spoken out of ignorance. He is talking to the socioeconomic group who elected him, and I suspect they hear him clearly and remain with him. I have no idea about an indictment, but he and his “apostolates” will see it as just another form of persecution. Memphis was a small town masquerading as a city for many years, somewhat insulated from the rest of the change this country has been going through. They are growing into a big city now. This means tackling big city issues, big city problems and big city growth. As this happensd those who have an affinity for the “small town feel” leave. EVERY city goes through this, goodness knows I’ve seen it in Las Vegas, NYC, New Orleans, Jackson MS, and other cities.
What you are overlooking is that as I mentioned yesterday, these same people that are leaving are still collecting paychecks from where? MEMPHIS. Were they really true to their words they’d leave whatever well paying job they have here (in Memphis) and work at their local Wal-Mart, feed store, Pizza-Hut or where-ever.

What is apparent, is the burgeoning industrial / retail / tech / gaming business growth in the adjacent areas. I seriously doubt if most of those workers leave their suburban jobs to return to a Memphis home, especially managerial & technical.
BTW, what difference does it make where they work??? It’s real obvious, most don’t want to live in Memphis.
A for instance … you may work in the Bronx, around 150th & Bruckner as a plant manager. Would you ever live in that area??? You may, but most won’t.
The point is: Business, for the most part, is not locating in Memphis any longer. They prefer the surrounding area. Also, the only real attraction to Memphis, for business, is the center of the country airport & FedEx.
A few years back, there were several very large banks headquartered in downtown Memphis, now there are none. The medical community has moved their major hospitals, and headquarters out of the Medical center area to very far east Memphis. Next step will be out of the city. It’s a play in progress. If you don’t see it … shame on you.
There are exceptions to this … but, they are exceptions.
Conservatives seem not to want to put this addendum to their criticisms of Democrats:
Every piece of legislation that would have helped this economy was blacked by the conservatives. Every bit of legislation geared towards ending this unnecessary and illegal war was blocked by the conservatives. They have taken on the role of obstructionists.

Presently, Buffalo is about 50% white. Buffalo experienced tremendous population shrinkage in the last 30 years. Similar to what is happening in Memphis, without the advanatage of being to involuntarily annex surrounding areas.
Like Memphis, the vast majority of crime, especially violent crime, is committed by blacks.
When you get near a 50/50 b/w ratio, your crime stats are going to shoot “off the charts”. This is due to the extremely high black proclivity to engage in criminal acts.
Look at ANY city with a high % of black population, and you will see very high crime rates. Goes with the territory, ma man!

It makes a HUGE difference. To me, as a MEMPHIS based home-owner and taxpayer THEY are freeloaders on MY tax dollars since I have to pay for the roads they use to get to and from where-ever they live.

Don’t know when the last time you were in that area, but as of last weekend I see quite a bit of new housing development going on in that area. Maybe it ONCE was a bad area, but not anymore.
Besides, NY got hip a while ago and taxes those who live outside the city THE SAME as those that live in it since they use city services while they are here at work. The only thing living outside NY gets you these days is a longer commute. For this reason alone the city is experiencing reverse white-flight. Young, people like myself are moving South, Whites (and for the record, I HATE using that term) are moving back into the city in huge numbers. They are also the ones re-populating areas like the one you mentioned in the Bronx.

Business as you know it, the truth is that Memphis is becoming a world shipping hub, FedEx will be running DIRECT flights to China from Memphis. This alone is spurring a growth in business here. You don’t become one of the top cargo centers of the world by losing business now do you?

For you information, when I lived there, crime was pretty much concentrated in a relatively small area of the city … the “near east side”. It was almost 100% black.
White neighborhoods, adjacent to the black enclave, began to recede and the black neighborhoods crept east and south. This “process”, as in most cities, began to accelerate (thanks to HUD putting blacks into houses they couldn’t otherwise afford, with our taxpayer dollars). Before too long, many formerly nice neighborhoods became majority black crime ridden examples of creeping urban blight. … Does this sound familiar???
Bottom Line: North Buffalo is still “ok”. South Buffalo will always be “ok” … BIG Irish ethnicity there. The West Side is about 50/50 Italian / Hispanic … the entire east side & University District is crime ridden and blighted (almost all black)!
So, ma man, that is how Buffalo got to where it is now. BTW, I lived in Amherst, which borders Buffalo to the north.
