Here’s the deal. If you weren’t raised right or you have just forgotten your manners, please go somewhere else. Anything linked to News Channel 3 must support the standards of NC3. That means if we would not put it on TV then it doesn’t appear here. Unlike someone sitting at home, we have certain standards to uphold. If you wouldn’t say it in full disclosure, don’t say it hiding behind a computer. I have been more than lenient allowing posts to remain. I love the dialogue but can’t stand the back and forth and utter rudeness. Those who really want to discuss an issue are being driven away by those going off topic. Know that I am tracking IP addresses and email names and will ban those who can’t follow the very simple rule of staying on topic.

Thank you sir, I was about to move to another news site if things did not change…I get no chance to talk about the topics at hand becuase of all flat out disrespect that some posters choose to exhibit..
From one Gent to another, thanks
Give me a breaaaaak, gent.
What do you mean you get no chance to talk???
For instance, the last topic was up for 5 days and had ~120 comments, before George deleted about a third of them.
Let’s see … ~120 comments divided by 5 days = 22 comments a day. You couldn’t “squeeze” a comment in??? Come on, even you should be able to come up with something better than that.
Look, you are just a “hall monitor” type whiner who can’t fathom anyone expressing an opinion, or a fact, you don’t find personally acceptable. Let me a*s*s*ure you … there are plenty of those snippets.
Why not be honest, and say … “george (boo hoo) I don’t agree with what some are saying and aren’t clever enough to defend my position … boo hoo”.
Its not even on topic, that is my problem…I want to discuss actuall facts about THE TOPIC AT HAND…Not how much this person hates this race and what there mom does with whomever….You prove to me that the things YOU and others have sent back and forth are ON TOPIC and ill recant my post….
I have been guilty a few times myself on that one Gent. I say to you sir, MEGA DITTOS!
Thank you George for doing this.
My mamma is part if the silent generation, she always told me that sometimes it’s better to keep your mouth shut. Her mother always said ,”Least said, least accounted for.”
George, I just want to say I hope I haven’t caused you any problems with the head honcho over there.
TJ,R.I.P.
To myself I say …………. POOF !
Never meaning to cause a problem with you or NC3 about issues that I may have gotten off topic with, I do apologize to you and your staff. I was hoping that the dialog here could be used to help solve issues in Memphis, but instead, I did get off topic every now and again.
Great job George!
Hi, will try again. Guess George was reading and thought I had too much and cut me off. We oldies will try to keep the disrespectful ones nice. Guess we oldies were raised with manners and that is the difference. Still it was an unpleasant April Fool’s. Was really enjoying Proud’s wolf and talking about my boy and Victorian’s views. Mr. Whitey had good patriot outlooks. Keep in touch folks.
Will invite again to myfoxmemphis for open forums and your choice of message boards if george is limited. good sense if needed over there too. but you can make your own messages like you could on rant 2.
Alright…fine by me. Let’s see how some of you measure up.
Yes, Irish – we ‘oldies’ WERE raised with manners. For those of you who don’t know yet, there is a Let’s Talk Memphis board at http://www.letstalkmemphis.proboards53.com/index.cgi
Victorian Catholic
I can apologize to George for getting out of line at times…but I do have a question. Since we are no longer allowed to post offensive and rude messages, what about the term “memfrica”? Is that term off limits now, or is it still allowable? This question is for George only. For the times I have been rude to people, I plead guilty as charged.
=====================================================
From George: Honestly, I’m torn. I’d prefer people don’t use the phrase but I’m not sure that it crosses a certain line, of course that varies from person to person.
It’s a very descriptive word.
What, specifically, does whiney tj find offensive about memfrica, eh??
Come on, tj, I’m calling your dim butt out on this one!!!!
See this is what I am talking about tj as rough as he has been just asked a question what reason do you have for the insults…NONE you cant justify the names and manner your speaking to him in….Why cant we just keep it civil and to the topic….
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh SHUT UP!
I second suthrngent.
In ohonor of the new decorum in this place: Fly, I shall not dignify your question with a response.
Ooops…I meant “honor”.
“Why cant we just keep it civil and to the topic….”
What is the topic?
=====================
From George: The topic returns tomorrow. I figured we could take a day to cool off.
Please don’t let the topic be about the Tigers. Let that one happen AFTER they win it all!!!
See this is what I am talking about tj as rough as he has been just asked a question what reason do you have for the insults…NONE you cant justify the names and manner your speaking to him in….Why cant we just keep it civil and to the topic….
Gent, Fly thrives from being just on the side of adhering to civility. His/her sole purpose has nothing to do with the exchange of information or ideas, but to agitate, incite and provoke. That being said there are a number of words and terms that can be used to describe other cultures that are not necessarily conversation stimulating, but not bannable either.
The question is, is that what you want? Verbal fencing rather than discussion? If that’s the case so be it, but it won’t be long before things degrade into what they were previously.
Ex-Pat
I guess us old ladies are just old foggies and set in our ways. We like good discourse and lively back and forth with various points of view. It enriches and widens ones education. Heated debates gets the blood flowing. It is when things get personal that get offensive and unnecessary. Go for the attack on an action, not a person. Make your point about a thing not a being. Mea culpa. I’ll be the first to admit my sins here, too. But after awhile, one tells someone to grow up.
Thanks!!!!!
I am glad to see changes on the Rant site. This site has made be very angry and I feel that it is only used to spew ugly insults at all black citizens in Memphis. This is not Memfrica, it is Memphis the city I love and grew up in.
Thanks
Don’t say the ”M” word !
M word M word!!!
Well, since I think we are all supposed to be adults here, I think that each and every comment ought to be the sole responsibility of the person who posts them. I hate censorship, whether I agree or disagree with a poster, I am supposed to be living in a free country and have the right to agree or disagree, just as I have the right to ingore or respond! If you don’t like what someone says, ignore them and don’t read it. If you feel that a fact was taken out of context, be a big enough adult to argue the issue. I don’t understand why someone from the news channel should take the moral high ground and decide what should and should not be said. If your not adult enough to argue what bothers you and ignore what is not worthwhile, then I think you have a major problem!
=======================
From George: Because we have the responsiblity of representing the station. If you want to say whatever you want and offend people then there are plenty of boards for that.
You’re spot on, motorcycle!
The tj was asked to state specifically what its objections to the word memfrica were. To date we have received no response.
Believe it, or not, there are some who thrive on creating “issues” to mask their own inadequacies. They hope to divert attention from important facts to phantom issues, as a method of self preservation. Some call this “blowing smoke”, and I agree with that description.
I believe many of this ilk spend much time dreaming up “issues” to feign hurt feelings, in the hopes they can appeal to the “po me” sympathizer crowd. Anything but address the real causes of their miserable stake in life.
I’ll give you a few examples; the “n word”, the “h word”, etc … It’s quite acceptable, to “them”, for rappers to riddle their lyrics with “n word” after “n word”. and “h word” after “h word”, and to use those words among themselves. If ANYone else dares mention the word, it becomes a vile insult and a mortal sin.
Now, we’re got the pseudo memfrica word issue. Let’s look around the country before we give any credence to these feeble complaints.
Is there an area of the United States called “New England”?? Is there a city adjacent to memfrica called Germantown? Is there a state called New York”? Is there a city in Louisiana called New Orleans???
Does Buffalo have a section of the city referred to a Kaisertown??? Are there Chinatowns in several cities???
I could go on & on with examples of cities, towns and sections of cities that share their namesake with the geographic origin of the predominant population.
See, why the objections to “memfrica” are, shall we say, feeble?
I must wonder what the next red herring will be??? I know it’s coming.
expat say:
“See this is what I am talking about tj as rough as he has been just asked a question”
at expat: He ignored the important question & hurled a weak insult as his reply.

expat say:
“Gent, Fly thrives from being just on the side of adhering to civility. His/her sole purpose has nothing to do with the exchange of information or ideas, but to agitate, incite and provoke.”
at expat: Your, and tj’s, “issue” with the Fly is not manners. It’s that you can’t palate the verifiable facts, and good ideas he usually puts forth. If Fly’s valid information, and clear thinking disturb you, perhaps you should take a good inventory of yourself to discover why.
Perhaps, there is a 12 step program for what ails you.
First off Fly, you forgot to mention the section of Memphis that was once a part of Nutbush that they now call Little Mexico.
I truely believe the only reason why they have a problem with Memfrica, is because a white person came up with the name. If a black person came up with it , not only would it be just fine, but they would make tee shirts bearing its name.
You guys go Google The Rant or Memfrica and see just how much H.e.l.l. raising is being done over the word Memfrica. It’s amazing. We ought to change it up and call it Memfreaka.
We better watch out or those mean ole blacks will start calling Germantown, N.a.z.i.town.
mrwhitey stated:
“We better watch out or those mean ole blacks will start calling Germantown, N.a.z.i.town.”
================
Whitey,
Therein lies the difference … would anyone in Germantown really care? I think not.
The majority of people are not into manufacturing “issues”, just the losers.
Wendi Thomas can spit it out with impunity from the Commercial Appeal.
If there is something two people’s parents didn’t teach them, it was this: Better to be silent and thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. That is what two people on this site have done…again.
You said it tj, must have been doing some spewing, too.
“You said it tj, must have been doing some spewing, too.”
…again!
TJ21, oaksirish – It is obvious who the fool is. I remain silent because you and the others have nothing positive to say about Memphis or people of color in Memphis. You don’t even live in Memphis. I don’t care what you think of me, because I am obviously more intellegent than you and your friends. I hold down a job, live in a nice neighborhood, collect a very nice retirement. So, by not responding to get a knee jerk reaction from you is smart. I constantly remind my 13 year old that there are people like you in this world that she should ignore and achieve the highest goal that she possibly can. Ignorance starts in the home, your home is no exception.
I still believe that each and every person should be held accountable for their own postings. Personally, I think it is unfair to say that the postings of some people on here, good or bad, represent the news station or even memphis as a whole. I guarantee that every city has it’s issues and it has people on both sides of those issues. Whether it’s race or religion or just taxes, there are no utopias on the planet. What someone posts is what they post, not necessarily how EVERYONE who watches the news or lives in Memphis necessarily feels.
People of color…..Memphis (good to say?) more intelligent…..
BUT, think about this….here goes the plaground yet once again!
Topic??????
My reply to tj was to point out that the idea was to attack the action, not people; or to propose a plan of action. Markeetta, I am so glad you are intelligent and that you think you are more intelligent than I. I am so glad you are getting a retirement as well as holding down a job and living in a nice neighborhood in Memphis. No I don’t live in Memphis. But I am driving in Memphis probably as much as anyone commuting there to work–which I used to do when I worked at Parkway Heaalth and Rehab and the end of South Parkway. Keep reminding your 13 year old to achieve the highest goal she can. But while you are doing so, please watch your own bigottedness which is showing through like a becaon of light on a dark and stormy night. Please remind her that people are precious and are God’s children. Keep reminding her to get a good education and that forgiveness and love are the two greatest teachings in the world to hold dear.
You know, it’s really wierd how seriously people take this blog and the internet as a whole. Take me for instance, MrWhitey, none of you really know that I’m white or not. I may be just a black guy on here to instigate and stir things up. You don’t even know if TJ is really black, or Peb1, you don’t know a thing, but about one person, and thats George Brown. Thats just because he’s on TV. I want to inform you guys about something. Not only do we have a freedom of speech, we also have the freedom not to read some or anything that is posted here. I have never heard of so much idiousy in my entire life. For someone to have the gaul to call the station manager or write emails to complain about this stuff on The Rant is just childish foolishness. If I ever met any of you face to face , I would say it more frankly than that. A certain segment of the community wants to push their IMAGINARY weight around. They think they are entitled to expect results of whatever they complain about. To some respect I think it’s working.
George, I know this is your baby. As much as I enjoy being on here , I would rather you close this joker down instead of caving in to the few who think they run things just because this is Memphis Tn.
You know mrwhitey, you really hit the nail right on the head. There are some who siimply can not for anything be pro-active or constructive about anything. However—this is called the RANT…..As such, it ought to allow r.a.n.t.i.n.g. I suppose some folks don’t know how to rant about things without attacking people.
I agree with Mr. Whitey on that one. Look at it this way, I grew up in a tough New Jersey neighborhood. Everyone on my street was Italian, Irish or Jewish. In school, we probably flung more insults at each other and had a million dirty jokes against one another (and some of the things that we said would probably been seen as quite hair-raising to the politically correct)but the truth of the matter is, at the end of the day, we all stuck together and all run together. One of my closest friends growing up was Jewish, he insulted me a million times over for being an Italian and I had some ugly comments back at him. But we were inseparable as friends. Here is what my mama taught me, talk is cheap, anyone can talk it’s your actions that define who you are. Any man can make promises and talk in a certain vein, what separates them is their deeds and not necessarily their words. My mama also taught me that respect is earned and you have to respect yourself before you expect others to respect you!
well, as soon as I said big brother, it clicked and cut me off again. gets a mite scary. will try for the fourth time.
Harley, I like what you have to say. However we are not together physically to help each other after the RANTing is finished. We can’t go have some hot chocolate or spaghetti or Irish soda bread at my house when the verbal is finished. There are some folks who get in this who really believe their excrement has no odor.
So out of respect to George, the civility needs be. There are no abilities for deeds here; only words.
So far since returning to this blog, I have had pretty much every post blocked, I find it so hard to consider what is accepted. I would openly say these things in public view in memphis. I am not here to even push my opinion. EVERY post has too sides, points for thought, and also generally return a polite comment from kind people such as “proudofmyheritage” and others.
George is it time to review your handcuffs?
ps due to someone talking my username, I was therealist!
http://www.theinterviewwithgod.com/popup-frame.html
mrwhitey-how marvelous and humbling. thank you.
oaksirish I get your point about the civility. I am not for/against anything that anyone on this forum has said. I was only saying that each person should be responsible for their own posts and certainly not blame channel 3 or George or anyone for what someone chooses to post. I am considerate of language. (Not talking about race terms either). The things that I might say, when repairing a motorcycle, in a garage full of other guys, is not the types of things that I would say in front of women and children. I have seen posts on here that say things like “Oh, so and so said that, so I know that news channel 3 is racist”. Wait a minute, just because someone chose to post that , does not mean that you can hold anyone responsible for it other than the person who typed it in. I am a regular contributor to another website, we get pranksters on there all of the time, no one blames the website for the prankster. So, I stand by my original stance, it should be post at your own risk. If you have an issue with the poster, take it up with the poster.Alot of rambling on my part, but don’t blame the board for a few posts!
Today, April 4,2008, is a day of reflection for a lot of people across this great land. I guess what happened on this day means different things to many different people. The following is what it means to me.
I think the Dr. King speech of his dream was right up there with the best of the best. Four score and seven years ago, A date which will live in infamy, Ask not what your country can do for you, One small step for man, That shining city on the hill. Yes that speech affects me just as all those do. It is a great piece of Americana. The last three presidents haven’t made speeches that even come close to that.
Something else I like about Dr.King is that he didn’t act like he wanted it all for his people. I think we all were his people. He wanted the same opportunities for whites and blacks. In other words, he didn’t have this now popular attitude , lets take it all and d**n the rest. He wanted everybody to have a piece of the pie. He knew that everyone would get a different sized piece, but the harder you worked the bigger piece you got. He mostly spoke great about America. Benjamin Hooks was on TV a couple of days ago echoing Dr.Kings feelings on how great of a country this is. It made me feel good to here him say that.
Now I guess you can say this is where my true color comes out. You see, not many black leaders speak like Hooks or King, they raise hell about the injustice of the past when most of us weren’t even born. The black leaders of today sound like radicals who want it all and at all cost. That attitude was born April 4,1968 in Memphis,Tn. On that day when those shots rang out, two things died and one thing was born. A great leader and statesman died, and the will of the white man died. What was born was the thug attitude. It took some years to evolve into what it is today. I truly believe if the events of that day had not occured then we wouldn’t have the culture we have today. I really think that if Dr. King were alive today blacks would be living a much better life, and that would mean we all would be living a better life. It would be a better world for all of us.
Alot of white idiots praise James Earl Ray for what he did. He did more harm to ALL of us instead good. I don’t believe there would be nearly as much white flight from this city. I also believe there would be a better mayor in office. Not a white one, but a better one.
When Ray fired those shots the white man lost control of his courage and backbone. He was ashamed and scared all at the same time. None of the prominent whites of the day couldn’t speak out on the severity of the tragedy. They hid under the sheets and quivered and still to this day have not come out. They were scared, and they bored children and taught them to be scared.
I too have a dream. I dream that we see a return of the solid backbone to whites that white people once had.
I dream that a day will come when a white man and black man has a difference that the white man won’t cower down in fear.
I dream that blacks will somehow find a way to trust whites and not forget about the past, but not use it as a tool for division.
