As you may have heard, a Shelby County man has been charged with voluntary manslaughter for shooting and killing a man breaking into his car. From the CA, “According to a police affidavit, Christopher Simmons, 21, shot Kendrick Danielle Watkins, also 21, on Monday morning because Watkins was trying to take the TV installed in Simmons’ 1993 Ford Crown Victoria.” Simmons said his car has been broken into four times in the past year. Witnesses report hearing 10-12 shots being fired. The DA is prosecuting Simmons because they don’t believe he was in danger or fear of his life. Simmons said he heard a noise, looked out a window and saw Watkins in his car then ran out and started shooting. Everyone seems to be torn on this issue of whether to charge Simmons. Many say, ‘good for him’ for fighting back against crime while others say he went too far. I had lived in Memphis for four days when my Jeep was broken into, the thief passed out in my car and police were called. The guy got off even though they found all kinds of radios and radar detectors and his finger prints everywhere. The DA’s office said they didn’t have enough to prosecute. In the year before moved, my Jeep was broken into five times!! I too was at the breaking point, whether I’d shoot someone, I’m not sure.
