Memphis police have arrested two MLGW workers and a Memphis firefighter in an undercover sting on prostitution. The two MLGW employees were working and in a company truck when police say they tried to solicite sex from a decoy prostitute. The firefighter was off duty at the time of his arrest. One man was arrested with his 7-year-old daughter with him in the car and birthday presents in the back seat.
Police say this is part of their ongoing crack down on prostitution and drugs.
Your thoughts? Do you think this program is working?
I hope the 2 on-duty MLGW workers are fired immediately. Utility bills are out of this world and these two bozos are out there trying to score a date while on the taxpayer’s dime. The firefighter is a different story - I don’t agree with his actions but he’s off-duty so the fact that he is a fire-fighter shouldn’t play into things. I feel sorry for the wife and daughter unwillingly dragged into this. The men should be ashamed.
Is the sting working?? No.
I don’t really agree that prostitution should be illegal. If people want to sell their bodies, why not make it legal and safer and tax it. We’d be able to better control STDs and help keep underage kids from participating as much.
And, why is the firefighter ” a different story”? Possibly because he is a different color than you or the other two? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Whereas these two surely should be disciplined, the firefighter’s lapse in judgment was even more heinous given the fact that these are the people we entrust to be there when life and limb are on the line. Should any of them get off? If they did it, throw the book at them .

From George: All three men are the same race though the rest of the group is varied.
Correction: Is the firefighter “a different story” because he is a different color than the other two, and the same color as you? This man makes his money directly from taxpayers. I am not dogging him out; having his picture displayed for the world to see is more than enough punishment. Piling on does no good, but this incident demonstrates that crime has no color.

“We’d be able to better control STDs and help keep underage kids from participating as much.”
Not necessarily Breezee. A recent CDC study showed that 3.2 million American teenage females are infected with a common STD. These young girls aren’t prostituting in the streets and nobody (parents, teachers, preachers, lawmakers, etc) was able to stop them from having sex and spreading STDs.
I haven’t seen the color of the lawbreakers and personally don’t care what color they are.

If the firefighter was catching a quickie in the back of the hook and ladder, I’d agree with the “Heinous” label but since he was busted off duty and there were no lives or limbs on the line, It’s obvious that his profession was only mentioned in the story for shock value. It is a good thing that they are cleaning up Lamar though. It has been starting to look like a hooker convention since West Memphis cracked down on the Truckstops…
I don’t know much about firefighters, but if they are the same as policemen, then they’re “off duty” when they’re out of the city. The “shock value” excuse can be used by anyone to defend anybody accused of any crime. the fact of the matter is, we may have some firebug in Whitehaven. Even if we do not, there have been a rash of fires in that part if the city. I am not excusing the other two buffoons that decided to have a quickie on their lunch break. In the immortal words of Ophelia Ford, ” that was dumb”.
The firefighter and the MLGW johns were all black.
It doesn’t make any difference what color they are.
Not to me, anyway.
Apparently, it does to tj21.
Someone has to be real desperate to go anywhere near those memphis hookers.
Talk about U_G_L_Y!
The fact of the matter is, this isn’t called the “world’s oldest profession” for nothing. These guys wanted to get their rocks off, but to do it on company time is a bit bizarre. Out of all the things you can do on your lunch break or your day off, getting caught with a hooker isn’t exactly high on my things to do list. It’s too dangerous.
Is the sting working? That depends on what you mean by working. If “working” means that it stopped on that part of town, maybe. If working means stopping it altogether, no. As long as their is a market for sex, there will be prostitution.

tj,
I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, because I’m just trying to be helpful … but, you appear to have the same problem as Thaddeus Matthews with “there, their & they’re”.
———–
Their, There, or They’re?
Their is a possessive pronoun. It always describes a noun.
Note the spelling of their. It comes from the word they, so the e comes before the i.
There is an adverb meaning “that location.” It is sometimes used with the verb to be as an idiom. It is spelled like here which means “this location.”
They’re is a contraction of they are. Note the spelling: The a from are is replaced by an apostrophe.
Examples: Their dog has fleas. (possessive of they)
I put the collar right there. (that location)
There are five prime numbers less than ten.
(with to be)
They’re 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7. (contraction of they are)

Hope this helps …
The skin color of these buffoons doesn’t matter so I won’t address it.
And all 3 make their money from taxpayer funds - MLGW is a public company so your tax money pays their salaries as well. The difference is the 2 MLGW workers were on the clock. The fireman was not. Is it a lapse in judgment? Absolutely. But I still don’t think his profession is important to the arrest for more than what was called shock value.
And I should have been more specific with my comment - we’d be better able to control STDs among prostitutes and their clientele.
Fly, do you have any tips on adverb use? Those have given me trouble at times. Thanks!
I guess you never made a mistake in grammar before. But your English lesson is irrelevant to me and in this matter. The fact of the matter is, ridding the city of this problem is not as easy as the police having a sting every now and then. It takes some morality that many of us do not have in order to bring this issue to a good end.
Tataschen, thought I’d try and help with those “adverbs”: you were asking about. I know you didn’t ask me but, here goes anyway.
Verb: moving
Adverb: moving fast
Hope that helps
Well I thought that I would comment on this one.
As far as the three PEOPLE that got caught up on Lamar, they should be exposed. If they violated thier company policy, then they should get fired. Since all three people are city employees, that shows alot of the city govenment. If they are not fired, then the City Govenment, upto and including the Mayor, are really showing that Memphis is just a city where crooks can get away with anything, as long as you have deep enough pockets.
And the people who should be the most outraged, MEMPHIANS. But for the past 17 years, most of you have let the mayor get away with anything, I guess this will be a hot topic for about 48 hours and then forgot about.
Well my opinion is this. MLGW has some serious problems no doubt. Over the last year they have had their share of bad PR. People sleeping on the job now this. I really feel that they should be fired immediately. The fireman too should be fired. But my opinion may be a little differant than most. MLGW guys. On clock, in uniform, in company truck. No problem … gone. No explanation at all. The fireman , not on the clock, not in company uniform, not in company truck…..GONE here’s why. Anyone in the Fire Dept or Police Dept should be held at a higher standard. Have you heard the there is no such thing as an off duty cop. Same thing goes for Fireman. He represent his dept wherever he/she is. This is taught to both Police and Fireman from day one and is usually part of their policy when hired. It is understood and expected. Any other person not in civil service would be a differant story. I think being put on TV and the car impounded and being put in jail and whatever comes about because of it should be plenty. Lesson learned. Just my thoughts. It is good to see something being done about Lamar. It is out of control and we need alot more of this in alot more places.
Agree with most comments.
The MLGW people should be terminated immediately … NO QUESTIONS ASKED! … gone, fini, fired
I don’t know what the “conditions of employment” are for firefighters. If he is in violation, because of this, the appropriate penalty should be meted out.
Let’s look at it like this … what would happen to these people in private industry?
OK in a private sector. If two people that worked in a normal office were to be put in jail I think that as long as they weren’t on the clock, not in uniform in they have one, and not in a company vehicle, and being put in jail didnt make them miss any work then I dont see where it would effect their job at all. However being put on TV and having it annouced that Jo-Blow was employed by xxx company was picked up today picking up hookers that could make it a hard decision to keep someone there. They basically brought negative attention to the company. Bad thing. Other than taking a little heat from co workers I really dont see that anyone would lose their job in the private sector. Unless some of the reasons I mentioned took place. Really would be up to the indivual’s managar at the time. Will be interesting to hear other view points on the issue. People get put into jail all the time without losing their jobs.
This is in response to the first comment:
Legalizing prostitution would have the same effect as legalizing drugs. It may help the entrepreneurs, but not the city as a whole. Would it cut down on std’s? Maybe, maybe not. In all honesty, I believe it would have an adverse effect on the children in this area. There would be some kid who drops out of school to start up his or her own “business” because it’s easier to make a living lying on your back versus getting some education and working a real job. Legalizing may be good in Las Vegas, but in the middle of the Bible belt, I don’t think it would fly.
Where I work, there is a notice on the board. If any of us are arrested and convicted of any crime, WE’RE FIRED ! And we’re a union company.
Well, good for that union.
Our tax dollars at work….
Sorry - did I say WORK?
Your energy dollars at work, with so many struggling to keep up with rising energy prices. Fireman off duty, still should be an outstanding citizen, just as if an officer got caught and arrested, should pay the consequences. departments will suspend or terminate if arrested for ANYTHING.
