School “Rape Dance” Causes Anger

We just ran a story about a video that was running on YouTube called, ”Mitchell High School Memphis … Rape Dat Ho.” The video shows high school students involved in a type of dance that can only be called extremely sexual. The students simulate sex acts in the high school gymnasium. Some students can be heard shouting, “Rape Dat Ho” in the background. A group of five administrators watched a copy of the video last week then offered a response.  “We’ve had an opportunity to look at the video and just want to make it very clear that behavior that we saw on the tape is very disturbing,” said MCS spokesperson Staci Franklin.  “However, in just what we’ve seen today we cannot clearly identify that those are our students and that it is one of our schools.” We are giving the school system a copy of the dance tape which you can see on wreg.com.

What do you think about this video and the videos that have been popping up all over YouTube with teenagers fighting, dancing lewdly and other things?

Similar behavior has gone on at a Shelby County Middle School for years. The administators look the other way on the most part. Why? School dances are money makers for the school. $5.00 – 10.00 a ticket multiplied by 200+ kids PLUS concessions. That’s good profit for a 2 hour period of time and the price of a DJ. You put a bunch of hormonal teenagers in a dark gym and play sexually explicit music, look the other way, and what do you expect? Is the school going to blame the students? I hope they don’t get away with that if they do. The adults should be held accountable.

It’s way past the time to keep laying all the blame on the schools. Behaviour like what was shown on the video isn’t the fault of a teacher or principal. If a kid behaves like an animal it’s because the parents allow it. Then when junior gets highlighted on the news, Who better to shift the blame to than the teachers. Lord knows that the Memphis school system is far from perfect but until the parents of animals stop treating the schools like a day care center for teenagers, The schools will remain like a zoo without bars….

    You’re right on, spy.

The punks look at a suspension as a vacation … their punk peers hold them in esteem for their actions.

The irresponsible parents could care less.

The cycle continues the downward spiral for the black culture.

It’s way past time for idiots like the two above to stop pointing their fingers at and making racist and blaket comments on others. There is no one that has not indulged in some type of lascivious or abhorrent behavior at some point in time. These are children, not punks you loser. And of course, we have to listen to the daily bigotry known as “observations of the black culture” from our resident idiot. Of course this is representative of “their culture”. Of course there is something wrong with “them”. There is no way this couldn’t be some kids having fun and harming no one. This had to be taught to them by someone and, even if they created this “dance” on their own, there was obviously no one there to corral that behavior. That girls were willingly participating in this orgy without skin is disturbing…very disturbing. Unless either one of you two morons you is a sociologist (which is hardly true, since thwe biggest finger pointer is an accountant only in the four corners of his hate filled mind), you cannot tell anyone what is an example of “black culture”. And, I have to say, news stations in this city seem to make it their business to find anything that makes black people look bad. That is disgusting.

I agree with your tj21, I knew race would come into play when this was posted on WREG. However, WREG needs to look at all teens white, black, asian, etc. This behavior is going on all over the nation. All you have to do is watch MTV and that will give you an indication where our children are getting this behavior. I think WREG always looks for ways to put down our black youth. You can go to any white teen party and see the same type of behavior, girls kissing girls, and the dirty dancing shown on the video. Is America and Memphis to think that white teens don’t get into trouble, well according to the Memphis news media, they don’t. We know that is not the truth, but the focus is to always put black kids on the front of all news stations. I wish that WREG was prowling Collerville, Germantown, Miss, Arlington, Tipton County, at the behavior of white children and your would see no difference. Shame on you WREG for even posting this disgusting video.
    =============================
FROM G: I’m sorry you feel this way. This video was brought to our attention and the participants happen to be black. The focus of our reports is not race but why these teens are acting this way and where are school officials.

    May 6, 2008 at 8:51 am

Why does this have to relegated to racist comments. I saw NO mention of racism in the two mentioned posts.

The fact is these kids are doing what they want because NO parents are policing their own children. These are mature enough to reproduce and are doing the next best thing to it, publicly. Like the post yesterday of the gays that were “outed”, these kids are being lewd and acting very unbecoming. I don’t care if it is white or black, straight or gay, if you act like this you should be kicked out of school.

Parents should be jailed for a time to wake them up too and make them start being parents. The parents are wrong but, let’s get one thing clear, these kids are and have to be accountable. We can NOT go through life blaming it on the upbringing. They know right from wrong.

    That is wrong!

OH, when boys walk down the street holding their pants up and girls walk around showing their booties and boobs then the next logical thing is to fornicate in public. STOP letting your kids wear these clothes and make them dress appropriately.

My son tried to wear his like these other boys. I told him to put on a belt and pull his pants up. If not I would wait until we were in public, be it church or wherever and I would pull them down for him. He said “DAD”. I said, try me.

    He pulled them up.

Well, here it is, markeeta … most white parents would discipline their kids severely IF they saw something like this. Black “parents” (aka baby mamas & daddies) are too quick to jump to the defense of their offsprings’ aberrant behaviors. You know this … as does any reasonable thinking person.

Although, I suspect there are some vaguely similar episodes that occur with white students, I’m confident they are not anywhere near as disgusting, or as frequent, as what was on that video. … If you can come across one, with white kids in it, please give me the link. In all seriousness, I think the Youtube video does have far less impact than the daily helping of the “Girls Gone Wild” infomercial. Speaking of which, you know the Girls Gone Wild guy has a bus right? He pulls up to most college events to film the shows (I saw it during Mardi Gras a couple of years ago at Tulane University).

Those videos have made that guy a multi-millionaire, but no one seems to express outrage to Comcast for airing that and a few other racy informercials night after night.

Personally, I don’t have Communist Cast. I have DirecTV. I did have it though and I NEVER liked that mess. Those girls get paid but the real money goes to that punk that makes them. He is nothing less, and mayybe even worse than, Larry Flint.

I wish these folks would quit this and the real way to stop it is just write the laws that keep the garbage from airing whether it is “news” or after hours.

I’ve never see “Girls Gone Wild”. You seem to be a big fan of the show, expat. Different strokes, I guess. … Watch yourself with those youngsters on your Disneyworld expeditions. It’s frowned upon … AND, illegal.

In addition to the lewd behavior, the other really critical issue is the mess happening on school property. Can anyone believe, in a “troubled” schools, such as Mitchell … there was no “adult” supervision???

City schools … under more responsible city leadership, I suppose.

“I wish these folks would quit this and the real way to stop it is just write the laws that keep the garbage from airing whether it is “news” or after hours.”

I think though with the era of readily available personal video just making laws won’t stop things, maybe just slow them down. Look at kids now, they all have cell phones. In my day I couldn’t imagine having that much to talk about that I would need to carry a phone 24/7, everywhere I go, or have that many people I need to talk to.

Kids now talk, text and send videos to each other all day and night. My nephew’s phone, literally, beeps all night from texting, (girls texting him). It’s hard to stem the tide of pop-culture.

The country now is one big networked place. If something happens in NY it can be instantly sent here and endlessly resent around the globe. There’s no lag anymore, no time between events and the event impact and even worse, no decay.

A video shot today will look the same 10 years from now. It may not have the same effect, but it won’t be a distant memory either. The silliness kids do on video today will stay with them for the rest of their lives (thank you internet). We old folks have to rely on fading memories of days past, kids of this era will have videos.

    George,
I beg to differ regarding MTV. But my question to you is given all that is going on in Memphis why does this rate as top story news? Was it lewd? In my definition, yes. Was there a crime committed? To my knowledge, no. Since you’re responding (and I do appreciate you responding, thanks) help me out here.

My overarching question to you as a media person is would anyone have even heard or known about this video had it not be sensationalized on WREG?

As a customer, this video, though lewd, is just not top story newsworthy, even on the slowest of slow news days. I would rather that time be focused on: local elections, national elections, BUSINESS NEWS (there’s a serious lack of that in Memphis), stock prices (if you want local, why not report on the local stock prices?). Anything other than a grainy Youtube top story of kids behaving badly.

The top story was about a city councilperson involved in an accident with a lot of questions surrounding it. If this had happened at someone’s private home it may not have been so newsworthy. The video already had a ton of hits. Some people say “so what” while others believe it’s indicative of a larger problem in our country.

Is news decided on by a team, consensus, or a news director? How does a story become what we see on TV? How does an idea turn into a news story?

This is what I have to say. I am 23 y/o female n we were dancing like that when i was in school. no one said anything about it then. It is just a form of dance that we do it dosen’t mean anything! Yall can make them stop dancing like that at school dances that is cool but what about the teenage parties that are thrown in adult settings. Granted they have to be out of the club by 12 or 1 am. Where when i was in high school we did the same thing. We even had dance groups that were glorified for dancing all sexual an seductive. We did basically the same exact moves. I even hosted a talent show in high school where every act danced the same exact way. It didnt mean that when we left school that we were gonna go home get naked and have sex. I think that the media and the press make to big of a deal out of nothing. We want to be protrayed as angles, but are not.Back in the day no one complained about how men would pick ladies up and dance with their legs wrapped around their waist. Is’t that a sexual way of dancing. To blame the parents would be stupid. what’s that saying you can lead a dog to water but you can’t make them drink. yeah that fits here. Parents can raise their kids to be the best person in the world all they want. untill they realize that they are people who make their own decision. The parents had nothing to do with the way thoese kids danced and the faculty were probably some where enjoying themselves. it was a after hours school function leave the kids alone n let them have their fun. I get tired of people picking on the youth. They are just having their fun.

Playing the blame game will not change anything nor will it help a problem come to a conclusion. Parents are key players in the role of a better education for students. They know their own children on a personal level. Parents should want to be engaged for the shake of not only their own children but the entire student body as well. They should belong in a child’s academic career. A day with a student at lunch will bring a smile on his or her face. I think there should be a plan of action to get parents involved at schools. Parents are not always involved in schools because they have “excuses” to not attend meetings or open houses. I propose that there should be a plan for parents to be involved in schools. Though most board of education has family engagement policies, parents still may not show up at schools. There should a way that will bring awareness to parents to show them that they are very much needed in the school system.

This happens everywhere, everyday, but now that it’s on t.v. we want to complain and be outraged. Then we all act like we weren’t teenagers at one time.

KIds being kids is one thing, I am allfor it too.

Acting like they are having sex or “dry humping” eachother in public is NOT and I repeat NOT being a kid. Or should I say NOT acceptable behavior!

    End of story!

It all starts with the parents. Everyone is trying to put the blame only on the school.

    George:

I am apalled that the WREG News Editors would submit this smut as news. You all played right into the young peoples plans. Now it will happen again and again all over the city. It was bad enough to say it was on Utube but to show the video just made it a BIG thing amoung teens.

Try to do a better job of relating to your audience or get used to not having one. I’m signing off now. Catch you on another station.

In my opinion.. We need to stop focusing so much attention on racisim. The problem here is lack of discipline at home, in the schools, and in society overall. It is a lack of punishment and a decision to look the other way so that we do not offend any one that has brought our society and our country to where we are today. If we were to regain control of our people, no matter their background, we would become a much more acceptable nation.

As far as the children here are concerned.. I recently spent some time at a restaurant where prom kids were coming in to eat in their outfits. Let me say I was offended by the “dresses” that some of the young girls were wearing (I call them girls, because ladies would have more sense than to dress like that and go out into public!). The manager of the restaurant thankfully stepped in and required that some of the more revealingly dressed girls had to put on their escorts jackets to be permitted to eat there. I have an 11 year old son and I dont feel that he should have to see such exposure as that while trying to enjoy a meal. I liken their idea of dress to something you would find at an adult lingerie shop. Yet, apparently their parents and communities see nothing wrong with sending their CHILDREN out looking like hookers.

We need to take a step back people and realize that CHILDREN having CHILDREN is our first major problem. This problem is not a racial one, as it spans ALL races. We need to start educating these kids. We need to start being there for them and supporting them. We need to lead them to the ideas that just because some girl on a magazine or in a video is dressed in such a way and acts a certain way, they should NOT look to them as an example. However, they should look to them as the representation of what not to become and to strive to be something more respectable.

Flyreborn you obviously live a shallow life. I have seen white children act like this in public and on tv. Come out of the dark and into the light. White partents would punish their children move severly, HA HA HA. I know how they punish them, they allow them access to the liquor cabinet, parties at their homes where liquor is on the menu and drugs to party with. You are obviously over the age of 80 if you think this is not going on with white children. Take a look at San Diego State College, and look at MTV, and the shows that feature white teens. I have a 13 year old and she can attest this as she has white friends that do the same thing. Wake up FLY or your wings will fall apart. George, don’t try and take up for your news station, they are smut peddlers. That should have been handled more privately before you aired this with the parents of the children in the video.

From George: Hi Markeetta. I can assure you we tried to work with MCS on this story. We’ve even given them copies of the tape so they can handle it internally. We blurred the faces of the students to protect them even though it was already on the internet. If the tape came from another school and featured other races we would air it just the same. Having worked at other stations, I can tell you WREG works hard to make sure we show all people in a fair light and that diversity plays a big role in all our coverage. On an average day you’ll see black attorneys, doctors, teens and others in positive stories and as experts in interviews. I just posted a story about MCS students being honored for their excellence. A few months ago, I put this report together.

My only supprise is that they were’t naked. MCS is a cesspool of crime and over paid baby sitters called teachers. I see the kids leaving MCS walking down the street. They look more like refugees from a bad circus than school kids. 60% on my county taxes are invested in this joke called a school system. What a waste. MCS is a lost cause!!!! The kids, parents, politicians all of whom are black don’t care and show little or no will to change or do better!!

why does everyone seem to be justifying or condemning just the dance style? The name of the dance “r8pe dance,” the lyrics chanted “r8pe dat h0″ along side the fact these are high school kids (not 18) dancing in this manner is the issue here imo.

    I couldn’t agree more.
It wasn’t long ago kids were “ghost riding the whip.” Now that would qualify as kids being kids. It’s the kind of thing that makes you laugh and maybe want to try even as an adult knowing it’s wrong. It was the kind of thing that is just irresponsible. The dance is far worse!

Well, I finally viewed the video. Beyond anything that should be seen in public. This should be for the privacy of a married couple’s bedroom. It is an arrestable offense-lewd behavior for sure. The adults-if any were present-which we know there was the one guy with the white shirt on- should also be charged with contributing as they did nothing to stop the behavior. It is trash, nasty, shameful.

Are you really surprised that this action occurs, even at a school. Very little discipline is administered by the faculty, as per several teachers that I know and admire. In fact, most are afraid to discipline the “student”, not only from the threat of the student, but from the administration.

What really bugs me abouot Channel 3 harping on the video is that the programming on their station actually contributes to this type behavior. For example, the sexual innuendos from shows like “Two and Half Men”, “CSI”, “Without a Trace”, “As The World Turns” and with the language used on the network shows you in your own way, promote the type behavior. Now you attempt to capitalize on this video for news, ratings, etc.

Don’t you think you’re being a little bit hypocritical?

From George: We don’t choose the programming CBS sends however you make an interesting point.

I watched “As the World Turns” off and on since I was a little girl when my mother had it on and that has been 40 years ago. Since they had the boy couple on, I quit watching altogether. I had almost quit due to the in and out of bed hops and who’s child is this? and let’s all get fornicated to this one and that one. The only good that has come out of that show is the addressing issues of brest cancer, abuse, and the like.
I watched 2 minutes of Two and 1/2 Men before I knew it was trash.
CSI had some good shows at first.
In post #24, Fly mentioned Disney. They have become one of the homosexual’s biggest supporters.
In all of this country’s television and entertainment venue, the right is ignored or berated and the wrong is celebrated.
Most of the children today are constantly exposed to this as the television is frequently the babysitter as it was their parents. Their parents were frequently not taught any better, and there is a spiral. It has nothing to do with color. It has everything to do with right and wrong, with the teaching of God and His Word. In reading some of the responses to the CA’s letters to the editor, there are a couple of writers who inevitably put down anyone with any morals–calling them Bible thumpers– or worse. Well, I am a big time Bible thumper. I will say the lack of Bible thumpers in the family homes is the number one problem in Memphis as in every town in this country.

Well, you got upstaged by FoxNews – O’Reilly with this story and deservedly so. You keep after it night after night as if you are the moral fiber of this viewing area. The shows that CBS feeds you that you have no control over, per your own words are as bad or worse than what the Mitchell kids did. I’m not condoning either, in fact they all should be censored from prime time viewing. Now you are set to start airing “Swingtown” which should be better labeled as spouse swapping. Shame on you. Further and not a part of this story is the story about Aubrey Calaway, which is slanted towards making Calaway a victim and his mental state as the justifiable reason for his crime. Much more of this type “news” and I’ll be watching another station.

O’Reilly’s showing both Monday and Wednesday nights showed Mitchell’s orgy well. The knot on a log interim superintendent Dan Ward with his “missed teaching opportunity” and the kumbaja Girls, Inc. lady just don’t get it. Ben Ferguson is the only one with sense locally from appearance on that showing. Like O’Reilly said, heads ought to roll, from the teachers, to the principal, to Dan Ward. The parents need be gotten, too.

Surely white Memphians can’t deny the fact that their own kids are acting and dressing the SAME WAY asthe “black thugs” they hate so much. This isn’t a racial issue. It’s a case of Memphis’ lack of morality coming back to bite it’s butt.
