The First 48

The First 48 is a TV show that airs on A&E and follows homicide detectives in several large U.S. cities. Memphis has been profiled for several years and is said to be a favorite of viewers. There are reports the city has told the show’s producers to pack up and leave because it generates negative publicity for the city. Others say it shows how hard homicide detectives in Memphis work and what a high “solve” rate they have.

Have you seen the show? What do you think about its effect on the city?

Have not seen this show. Know nothing about it. My husband and I hardly watch TV, other than news and weather. EWTN, History Channel, Discovery Channel, and movies on TCM.

Interesting to watch the differences and similarities of the various police depts as they go about solving crimes. In a small town masquerading as a big city like Memphis, I can see where this can generate a degree of friction.

Overall they should appreciate exposure and work to spin it positively. But as always the powers that be are short-sighted at best. They never fail to pick the most vision-less option off the table.

I have seen the show…and I love it! I know a couple of the homicide detectives that have been featured on the show, and they are some of the nicest guys (and ladies) you could ever meet. The fact of the matter is, crime does happen in Memphis, but not at the rate that some of the detractors of Memphis (who are mostly the racists who have an issue with the African -Americans) who frequent this cite would imply. That this has become a nationwide phenomenon is not surprising as many people love to see how someone else is suffering. Hiding the crime that happen in Memphis is not going to stop them. It’s not going to make this city any safer than it is, and no, I don’t think it’s giving the city a “bad image”. It gives an in-depth view of how police works is done. Pretending that crimes don’t happen here is not being realistic, and those who love to point out the “crime problem” that Memphis allegedly has must have come from Shangri-La, or somewhere in which crime does not happen. Hiding crime does not help the city; it only serves to give a false image of city life this country needs to see.

Crime is a crime you can’t sugar coat it and make it go away. Does this show detract from Memphis, nah. Just shows the real life of Memphis and the officers who work hard trying to solve these cases. Will this show make crime increase for Memphis? You have elements who will try to grand stand and be copy cats. But, then you’d have that anyway.

They should leave it alone and let it air.

  5. 5 lynn5 May 12, 2008 at 5:48 pm

I watch that show everytime it’s on and love it… It shows how they go about solving these crimes whether it’s in Memphis, Dallas, Fla or wherever. They need to leave it alone. Again it show the stupidy of memphis. It’s reality so get over it.

  6. 6 spyroclone May 13, 2008 at 7:07 am

By telling to the producers of “The First 48″ to pack up because the program generates negative publicity is just another example of how the powers that be in Memphis shoot the messenger when they don’t like the message. If anything, The program shows the professionalism and dedication of the detectives investigating the crimes but city government, Being true to form is blaming a TV program for all their woes.

  7. 7 theflyreborn May 13, 2008 at 7:44 am

One has to back up a little to take in the scenario. …

    • Why does one think the show would be filming in memphis, in the first place??? … Answer; Because of the extraordinarily high crime rate, which allows their crew to remain busy.

Native memphians may feel the show portrays memphis in an unfavorable light, but … that’s the real memphis.

The dim and corrupt black leadership of memphis showed its backside on another national show last night. Dim Dan Ward, acting MCS superintendent, made a fool of himself (and the MCS) on the Bill O’Reilly show last night. He could not have come across as any duller, disinterested and inept, if he’d been trying.

Tune into Bill O’Reilly tonight. Thaddeus Matthews will be putting memphis in the national spotlight, again on the show, talking about the dirty dancing at MCS. Have your ebonics translation manual on hand for this one!

Hey folks, it just memphis being memphis … on display for all to see.

Makes one embarra$$ed to even live in the metro area, and to be a$$ociated with such nimrods.

Now, those two on National TV is a real joke. I guess Willie sent them as ambas$adors to O’Riley’s show. LOL

    Go Memfo!

  9. 9 tj21 May 13, 2008 at 9:16 am

The simple fact of the matter is, Memphis has its problems…just like any other major city. One of Memphis’s problems is that bigots like Fly are allowed to make disparaging remarks about this city, apparently with the blessing of the people that run this forum. There is no such thing as a “crime problem” here, but there is a “whine problem” by the detractors and racists that live in the outskirts of the city. These morons love to spew out racial hatred about this city, and seem to take delight anytime this city or its leaders are portrayed in a negative light. If you don’t like Memphis, get out! If you’re not here already, please do us a favor, and keep Memphis out of your hate-filled mouths.

As usual, a dumb remark from resident chump, tj21. Here it is:

There is no such thing as a “crime problem” here, but there is a “whine problem” by the detractors and racists that live in the outskirts of the city.
    —————–

There is no crime problem. I suppose this is why memphis is always leading the national crime stats for all of the “no crime problem” cities.

Looks like he believes there are no cities in the USA with a crime problem. tj21 illogic being; … If memphis doesn’t have a crime problem, how could a city with less crime have one, eh????

I feel much safer knowing our renowned “criminalist” has determined memphis to be very safe.

Hmmm … I still have to wonder what is causing all the bullet ridden bodies to stack up. Dunno????

“Again it show the stupidy of memphis. It’s reality so get over it.”

Some people don’t want to face reality because they enjoy living in their dream world. The entire world will still know about the senseless, out of control crime in Memphis, Tennessee without A&E’s help. They (the leadership and citizens in denial) can’t sweep murder/violent crime statistics under the rug. And those of us who enjoy the show will still get to watch it - no problem!

And what is this mess with a city council person threatening a reporter with her ghetto trash talk because the reporter is doing her job….so typical of the leadership in Memphis.

  12. 12 tj21 May 13, 2008 at 10:01 am

“Some people don’t want to face reality because they enjoy living in their dream world. The entire world will still know about the senseless, out of control crime in Memphis, Tennessee without A&E’s help”

Reality: Crime happens EVERYWHERE. If you people are looking for a crime free place, try Heaven…but I doubt Heaven has any room for a bigot like you. Also, how do you know that “Memphis leads the national crime stats”? How do you know? Or, is this yet another mythical “fact” from our resident bigoted moron? Your “facts” are about as stable (and correct) as your beliefs.

  13. 13 spyroclone May 13, 2008 at 10:01 am

There is no such thing as a crime problem?? That statement is an example of some peoples inability to absorb reality. You complain about people from outside the city whining about Memphis but one fact of the matter you neglected to mention is Memphis’s Non-Crime problem(Your words not mine) tends to spill over the borders of that qaint little village you call home. It’s no wonder there is such a big non-crime problem in Memphis, With the attitude that criminals in Memphis aren’t really criminals because they get picked on, You are just aiding and abetting…

  14. 14 tj21 May 13, 2008 at 10:06 am

For one, my simple minded moron, the word is spelled “quaint”. Second, who are you to tell me what “I’m doing”? I suggest you get in your place. Where is your proof that Memphis criminals “spill over” into other locales? When and how often does it happen? When did it ever happen? I think you’re imaginaing things…again. You’re just whining, just like the other bigots who use this cite as a means to spread their racism and bigotry.

Yessiree, we sure do have a dual standard of “acceptable” behavior, don’t we?

Remember when mayor bill challenged Brent Taylor to a fight in a city council meeting??

Remember Harold Ford’s “east memphis blue eyed devils” remarks???

Wonder what the reaction would have been if a prominent white politician challenged Myron Lowery to a fight???

… or, if a white politician had made similar remarks to Omari Fleming, or Alex coleman??

… or, made a remark about the “nappy headed south memphis devils”???

Does anyone think the reaction would have been quite as subdued?

  16. 16 theflyreborn May 13, 2008 at 10:32 am

Again … “Where is your proof that Memphis criminals “spill over” into other locales?
    ===============

I suppose the most recent example is the young gentleman from memphis who murdered two people in Southaven a few days ago.

There are many others … IN FACT, almost all murders in the memphis metro area are perped by young gentlemen who reside in memphis, and venture outside the village to kill someone.

  17. 17 tatsachen May 13, 2008 at 10:33 am

    “Reality: Crime happens EVERYWHERE.”

Fact: I didn’t say that crime only happens in Memphis. I said that the crime in Memphis is HIGHER than it is anywhere else in the country - it is called OUT OF CONTROL.

My point is thats exactly why 48 was here. High crime, never a lack of show material. The current (and future) city leaders have allowed a cess pool environment to develop.

Folks like TJ should be proud.

Why don’t you ask Officer Mike Waters of the WMPD that question TJ??? Oh that’s right, you can’t, He was killed in the line of duty chasing criminals from Memphis that were commiting crimes outside of Memphis. What’s your excuse there? They weren’t robbing a store, They were just taking out a payday loan? How about the old “They were not running from the law, They were just trying to blow the carbon out off their spark plugs? How often does it spill over you ask? Once is one time too many. As far as my place, It’s right here….

  24. 24 tj21 May 13, 2008 at 11:59 am

“If I owned a large corporation I would be banging the door down to relocate my business to Memphis!”

That is, if you had what it takes to run, let alone “own”, such a company. Under your inept leadership, I doubt it would be anything but a monumental failure, and probably out of business within the first three months. There is crime everywhere. Now, our resident idiot loves to talk about the improvements made in NYC—improvements started and made by Dinkins but Giuliani took all the credit—credit he does not deserve—when he added his bigotry to them, calling it “taking the streets back”.. The fact of the matter is, crime has always been a part of society. When all is said and done, it takes a community effort to truly root out crime. That means businesses need to be willing to give the umemployed jobs, not send them overseas and exploit another poor nation. That means the police need to be the civil servants they are, not superheroes with guns going out to “crush necks”. That people like Fly and others are “scared of crime” is actually a good thing. These people feel like they should be able to insult and berate blacks whenever they want, with no reprecussions. These people feel crime is “rampant” when they can’t use the “n” word freely, without fear of reprisal. What’s more, Fly is actually funny, and not just funny looking: He honestly feels like he is in a position to interpret crime statistics, and predictably, he gets it wrong and always puts a racial slant to them. Oh yeah. “Blacks need to…” Oh yeah. This is coming from a college droput with no legal or criminal jsutice training. The reason why he feels he is right is because if his pale complexion. The facts are the following: Crime has actually went down in this city from 2006-2007. In this never ending quest by white business owners to increase their already unncecssarily high salaries, they ship the jobs overseas, looking for a new population to exploit, and leave the workers of this nation with no recourse other than to make a living the best way they can. People like fly are out of touch with reality. Always have been, always will be.

  25. 25 theflyreborn May 13, 2008 at 12:14 pm

Notice how tj21 in his rant ignores the FACT that 1 of 3 adult memphians can’t read at a 5th grade level.

Hey tj21, who in their right mind would hire these geniuses? … and for what? I’ll bet the math skills are worse.

Memphis does not have an desirable workforce. The intellectual shortfalls are one thing. Add the lousy work ethic & employee integrity issues, and you have a serious problem.

I’d quit worrying about jobs leaving, until there was a workforce in place to attract employers to memphis.

Look at what’s in play … lousy schools (including colleges), an almost illiterate workforce and a lousy work ethic.

You’re a prime example, tj21. You can barely read & write, and you tout yourself as a “criminologist” working for the city of memphis. It don’t get too much worse than that!

  26. 26 tj21 May 13, 2008 at 12:21 pm

You’re mother can’t read, and your father can’t do…well, anything except convert oxygen into carbo dioxide, and he can’t do that right. While you’re talking about memphians “not being able to write, I guess you would do your English teacher proud with “it don’t get”. For someone claiming to be so smart, that was an elementary school mistake. I guess your school wasn’t much better.

  27. 27 theflyreborn May 13, 2008 at 12:24 pm

Good grief, tj21 … you still choose to ignore the adult illiteracy problem in memphis.

    Why is that?

Yes you can! As a matter of fact, I have learned a lot from you here and at other sites you post on. What I find funny though, is that when you post your stats, BJ comes back and screams how wrong you are yet he doesn’t (and can’t) provide any information to prove you’re wrong or to prove his own point. All he can say is “your momma this and your momma that” …. 16-year type mentality. Whatevah!!

  31. 31 fedupone May 13, 2008 at 1:22 pm

One in Three adult Memphians can’t read past the 5th grade level! That equates to about 200,000 adults in the city of Memphis.

What do you think about that TJ?

A.Do you see that as a problem?
    B. If so, What would your solution be?
    C. If not, why not?

  32. 32 tj21 May 13, 2008 at 1:28 pm

    At fedup:

    1) And? There are schools here. That someone chooses not to take advantage of them is no one’s fault but their own.

    2) Solution: My mom once used to always day, ” You can take a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” It is up to the individual to do all he or she can to get the education that is offered at the public school system. If that individual chooses not to do so, that is on him/her.

If the teachers are doing all they can to educate the populace, why blame them?

  33. 33 tj21 May 13, 2008 at 1:29 pm

I might add that the employees, other than the show producer is glad to be leaving Memphis. Word has it they are tired of their vans being broken into. Also, one camera man was attacked while shopping in Hickory Hill. Their hotel rooms were being looted also. I sat with one of the guys at Alfreds on Beale a few weeks ago and he said he was glad when they could leave here, his wife back in California was worried about him being here.

  44. 44 tj21 May 13, 2008 at 2:17 pm

    Now to be real…

Often times, children are caught in the web of a school system ill-fitted to meet their needs. When problems are identified (some of which have nothing to do with whites or the school system), it is oft times too late. Reaching children early on in their lives is the key.

  45. 45 tj21 May 13, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Add to that the fact that education in some cases takes a back seat to this thing we call survival. Kids learn how to survive much faster than they do anything else.

We aren’t taking it anymore.

The main problem with this deal of high crime that draws national media attention is this, Willie Humpington. YES, he has the world’s largest ego and more arrogance than a city hall full of DC politicians.

I saw last night that he says he has all the qualities needed to run the schools and that the school board has to “draft him to be super.” NOW, I ask you, with an ego like that is it any wonder this city has a crime problem that can NOT be put under control? He won’t let it be controlled. He is to busy controlling the minute things in government. Like created jobs and raises for friends and brown nosers.

    GO Dr. Willie!

    “We aren’t taking it anymore.”

Youy people have offered slighted “opportunities”, have set the table for blacks to fail, lied on us, about us and to us, but then throw your hands up in the air in shock and start whining when we put the blame where it belongs—on your heads. Then, you whine when we give you credit for your handiwork. Embrace your legacy. Rather than whining about being blamed, here’s an idea: Why not try to do something right and fair for a change? That might help. Of course, you’d have to be honorable in order to take that course of action.

    Congrats tj21,

This is you best display of whining, and failing to accept ANY responsibility for the miserable condition of your culture, you’ve spewed to date!

Again, until your skinny, accusing fingers stop pointing in any direction, but towards yourselves, for the solution to your problems … no change is possible.

Quit looking for a hand out. A$$UME responsibility for your own lives.

Please try to remember where you would probably be, if you were still alive … right now, if your particular forefather had been more fleet of foot.

    nuff said …

TJ - Please explain what you mean by “do whats right and fair” I don’t understand.

What’s being done wrong and unfair?

I mean come on dude, black folks are a majority in the city, run the city, run the schools, schools are almost 100% black, school system is the 2nd largest employer in the whole state, blacks receive the majority of government jobs, blacks this and that. What exactly else does whitey need to do to make you folks happy ?

Sorry Bud, but your MESSES don’t belong to me!!! I refuse to claim it - it’s yours - fix it yourself. I’ve got my own life to lead and that is all I am responsible for. What an idiot.

This is pathetic, everyone has an opinion, and none of over half of these have to do with the topic. Unfortunately, you have to look at the statistics. The numbers don’t lie. You can interpret them any way that you like but in the end the numbers don’t lie. The “First 48″ is actually an excellent show. It helps to put faith back into the MPD. Now if you don;t like the show because it shows progress made well then put down your weapons and flush your drugs. ONly people who have something to hide worry so much about the police.

In this day and age there should be no racial problems. However, because of the lack of education and interest there are those (both black and white) who constantly rant about how “unfair it is because of the color of their skin.

I live in Frayser, I am white, and I live alone. I am one of 3 white people in my apartment complex. I have no problems, even the most notorious resident and I have no problems with each other (he’s black by the way). If I, a born and bred redneck, can get along with the opposite race, then all of you can.

People, we need to stop this madness. You have to know where you come from to know where you are going. My world history teacher in high school, Mr. Comez told me that once and it has stuck. History is a series of events that stemmed from tragic and traumatic events, however, if we do not move beyond slavery and the inequality of the early 20th century then we have made no progress. It is time to stop blaming others and take responsibility for our own actions.

    The past has been corrected:

    1. You aren’t a slave.
    2. Jim Crow Laws no longer exists.
    3. You are free and are as equal as I am under the law.
    4. Laws are on the books to give you those equal rights.
    5. Affirmative Action is in place to help you against those those racists who do discriminate.
    6. There are special advantages out there for black people only (scholarships, grants, etc.)

NOW DO YOUR PART by being a responsible plain old AMERICAN citizen who lives in the NOW and plans for the FUTURE instead of living in the past.

You will not be placed upon a pedestal if that is what you are asking for. Your race is no more special than anyone else’s. Time to stop thinking it is. You are just another Joe Blow, like everyone else. Get over yourselves already. The sympathy well has run dry.

    Some tips for success:

    • Get married before you have children. Raise your children responsibility.

    • Do not expect the schools to raise your children. That is your job.

    • Don’t expect others to pay your room & board.

    • Keep your house and neighborhood clean, and in good repair.

    • SNITCH

    • Pay your bills … on time.

    • DO NOT shoplift.

    • Prioritize your expenditures. Hint … food and rent come before 22″ spinner rims.

What’s that sound? I hear a clicking sound that harkens the DELETE button warming up.

    Welcome to the DELETION ZONE!

It’s fascinating to see what get removed and what gets left after the daily deletion event. This one has me scratching my head though. I can’t see a method or pattern to this one.

negative publicity? It’s a reality show! need I say more? only wholesome tv media (ex. “hustle and flow” ;) are allowed here! duuuhhhhhhh!

  76. 76 victoriancatholic May 15, 2008 at 9:23 am

    Yeah, 2cents…. Irish-Americans need not apply….

  77. 77 ford13 May 15, 2008 at 11:04 pm

Whether televised or not, crime is everywhere. I think this show just lets people have an understanding of what it takes and what effort is put into solving crimes. It doesn’t degrade the city any more than the media does on a daily basis, the only difference is the media does it several times a day!!!!

  78. 78 2cents4smalltalk May 15, 2008 at 11:49 pm

I agree ford, but lets not forget local (legitimately concerned audience with a neighbor’s perspective) vs. national audience (for entertainment purposes)
