Memphis City pools will re-open July 2 with tougher rules and more security after two drownings on the day the pools opened to the public.
During a committee meeting Tuesday afternoon, Parks Director Cindy Buchanan said, “Memphis City pools are as safe as they can be.”
Buchanan told committee members the last several weeks have been spent going over pool rules as well as talking with other cities to see what rules could be adopted here.
Here are some plans for pools when they open:
- Badges/ID Cards for kids using pools
- Detailed information to be filled out by parents for children to use pool
- Color coded bracelets would differentiate those allowed in deep end from those not allowed
- Hourly breaks to clear pool and give everyone a rest
- MPD to help with security at pools
- Children 12 or under or those less than 4 feet tall would have to have an adult take them to and be with them at the pool and IN the pool
Life Guard Requirement:
- 1 for every 25 people, 2 for every 50 required
- The cities largest pool is at the Ed Rice Community Center and has a capacity of 250 people. 7 lifeguards are on duty there
- $10 an hour is current pay for lifeguards
Cindy Buchanan stresses lifeguards are on duty, not to babysit, but to save lives.
Several city council members have questions and concerns to this plan could change.
