New Memphis superintendent Kriner Cash has offered a job to friend and former co-worker Gerald Darling. Darling is the police chief of Miami-Dade public schools. MCS will only confirm Darling has been offered “a” position but will not specify exactly what that position entails. Miami media reports say Darling has decreased crime and arrests in his four years on the job but they also say he has been controversial for his tactics and not union friendly.
It’s not unusual for new leader to bring in some of their friends.
What do you think about Darling possibly coming to Memphis?
schools don’t need police, children need “parents”,start punishing the so called parents when children misbehave, and teachers can do their jobs in peace, instead of a war zone.
Mr. Darling to me looks like a 4 star General and I dont think the City School Systems needs someone like that. Plus it makes me very suspicious of him since Kiner Cash wants to bring him in from Miami. I would like to see someone from another location. We dont need people that are friends controlling the School Systems Policen Department. I believe that should hire someone from another major city with the same credentials or possibly someone who is a retired from the MPD.
Good –Good–Good ! Send more help the MCS need it..!

What is this, the gestappo? The fact of the matter is, the last thing we need is a director with his own police force. If Dr. Cash is unable to do this job on his own, then maybe we need to give the other guy a try. Miami is a lot rougher than Memphis, and these alleged strong arm tactics by Darling will not go over well with parents. The kids need to be taught, not intimidated. I say Darling needs to go…period.

In case you hadn’t noticed, crime and violent behavior, along with gross academic underperformance have become the norm in almost all majority black school districts in the entire nation.
This happens in spite of per pupil expenditures well above the average.

“Darling will not go over well with parents.

—————-
They sure do need to be taught … some respect for getting an education, and respect for school authorities and cla$$mates.
This teaching, which has been absent for many MCS students, is the responsibility of non performing parents, of which there is no shortage of in Memphis.
The parents that won’t be pleased with Darling are the same ones who don’t responsibly parent their kids.
The parents of well behaved, interested students will be quite pleased to have someone on board to keep order in the schools.
“The parents that won’t be pleased with Darling are the same ones who don’t responsibly parent their kids.”
And, how do you know this? Either you were under him, or you’re lying again. That’s what one would expect from a bigot such as yourself. Unless you have been directly under this man, you don’t know how his tactics are. Then too, I thought you were one of the people whining about Cash’s hiring? Now that there may be some aggravation with parents (BLACK parents), you’re all for it. You really need to get a grip, son.
“The parents that won’t be pleased with Darling are the same ones who don’t responsibly parent their kids.”
And, how do you know this?”

It’s very easy for anyone with 1/2 a brain to conclude that parents of the well behaved student will have no problem with Darling, and increased security.
Now, on the other hand, the miscreant irresponsible parent of the wannabe thug, thug, and general rabble rouser will not look forward to a well administered school security system.
Their punk kids will be “outta business”, and perhaps “outta there” which will allow well behaved kids to learn.
I thought, even you, could have figured that one out.
The Gestapo was a secret police force. Letting the public know that you are going to establish a Memphis City School Police Force hardly qualifies for the term you try to apply to it. You are being extreme and exaggerating, as usual.
If you could set aside your distrust of police officers for a minute and stop excusing certain parents for their undisciplined, disrespectful, criminal-minded children, then you possibly could understand why these measures are needed.
The job of the school system is to educate and to keep the children safe while in their care. The disruptions by unruly children keep this from happening. Obviously, they do not respect adults who can’t do their jobs because they are too busy dealing with distractions caused by these wild children. Maybe, the punks will respect an armed presence. If this intimidates those students with criminal tendencies and prevents them from acting out their criminal behavior, then GOOD and mission accomplished.
“It’s very easy for anyone with 1/2 a brain to conclude that parents of the well behaved student will have no problem with Darling, and increased security.”
There may not be a need for “increased security”. That is a figament of your disillusioned imagination, and has no place here. There are very few people who want more police when they are not needed, except people that are naturally scared. If you have a fear problem, maybe you need to look in the mirror versus have someone “look after the thugs” (Speaking of that, do you know any of these “thugs”? Or are you just running your mouth again?).
“You are being extreme and exaggerating, as usual.”
Since you have no children in MCS, you are being a typical paranoid bigot. More security turns the schools into a jail system, which is what you people really want anyway. Why don’t we put more security in SCS? After all, with the rampant drug abuse and high dropout rate, maybe if these kids felt safer they would want to go to school. MCS needs more money, not more cops, Take your ignorant Republicanesque nonsense back to Collierville or wherever you’re from, and let it stay there. If you could set aside your “rah-rah” mentality, obvious racial bias and let people be people for a minute, maybe you understand why these measures are extreme and unnecessary. Further, who are you to say these “measures are needed?” have you done any statistics or are you qualified to make any generalizations about the schools? I think not.
The more I hear of Cash the more I like him. Meeting with families with children enrolled in MCSs outside his work arena was a great start. Setting the stage as a new Memphian opposed to being an outsider exhibits his interests to be genuine and parallel with the parents. My ? is, why is the police chief being refered to as his “friend.” This term suggests his crudentials take a back seat to his relationship with mr. Cash. Were the two “poker buddies” or did they have a good working relationship. I say kudos to Cash for saving us the time, money, and effort necessary to find someone tried and true for this position. How long did it take for us to find a superintendent? I believe the man is simply following through to achieve his goals presented to us.
“Since you have no children in MCS, you are being a typical paranoid bigot.”
How many children do you have enrolled in Memphis City Schools? While you are at, show me where it is written that a person can’t voice their opinion about the crappy state of affairs at Memphis city schools unless you have a child who attends. I didn’t think so.
The students at Memphis schools get more money than any other in the state of Tennessee and there is absolutely nothing to show for it. It is ignorant for anyone to claim the problem is lack of money. I lay the blame at the feet of the inept, lazy parents who aren’t taking care of their responsibilities at home.
“Further, who are you to say these “measures are needed?”
The expert, Dr. Cash, said these measure are needed. I believe him, along with the Memphis failing schools report and police reports of the violence happening on campus. And who are you, a downtown, time clock punching worker, to second guess him?
“Further, who are you to say these “measures are needed?” have you done any statistics or are you qualified to make any generalizations about the schools? I think not.”

I have read the TCAP, and NCLB results for MCS, and they are pitiful.
I have also read, and seen much on the local news, regarding violent behavior in the MCS … a$$aults on teachers, a$$aults on other students, near riots, gang activity, shootings in and around the city schools, etc …
There are restaurants that will not allow school functions with large numbers of MCS students on their premises because of the outlandish behavior.
These are under performances, and violent / criminal behaviors, not present, to any meaningful degree, in the county, private & suburban systems.
For you to point the finger at any other school system in the metro area as out of control is extremely hypocritical.

“You are one of two things … either inherently personally dishonest, or a blatant fool.”
You are one of two things: an idiot that a hypocrite, or a hypocritical idiot. The fact of the matter is, all inner city schools are suffering from the same problems—a lack of adequate funding, and underpaid staff—and all you do is blame the victims. The children are suffering due to a government that is out of touch with reality. This “No Child Left Behind” garbage is very counter-productive and has done more harm than good, but you people can’t stop praising it. This is mainly because of your bigotry, which is very evident with you. Anything that makes blacks look bad, you swear by it.

Welcome Gerald Darling. If Dr. Cash has faith in, then we will too.
TJ21 As to: “The children are suffering due to a government that is out of touch with reality. This “No Child Left Behind” garbage is very counter-productive and has done more harm than good….” Whether No Child Left Behind is effective or not, good or bad, all children across the nation come under the same rules.
Parents need to be more aware of their children, their friends, their favorite hangouts and they need to check and double check this continuously. When trouble starts and is out of hand, they should be responsible and accountable; otherwise, ramifications – financial or criminal.
I agree: “…..children need “parents”, start punishing the so called parents when children misbehave, and teachers can do their jobs in peace, instead of a war zone.” It is called accountability.
“The fact of the matter is, all inner city schools are suffering from the same problems—a lack of adequate funding, and underpaid staff—and all you do is blame the victims.”
The FACTS of the matter are opposite to your statement. The MCS funding is more than adequate. In fact, MCS is funded at ~40% higher per pupil than the surrounding systems. The MCS teachers are, in fact, the highest paid in the area.
“The children are suffering due to a government that is out of touch with reality. This “No Child Left Behind” garbage is very counter-productive and has done more harm than good, but you people can’t stop praising it.”
The children are “suffering” due to an abundance of irresponsible parenting. Some, like you, believe it’s the government’s , and the school systems’, responsibility to parent children.
That is faulty reasoning, at it’s lowest depth. Parents are responsible for delivering well behaved children to the school systems to educate. To expect anything less is folly.
The implementation of NCLB was the first glimpse we had of how lousy a job some school systems were actually doing educating children. It outed the grading & curving reporting disparities in all schools, and held them to a nationwide uniform standard of performance.
How bad it actually was became apparent when some systems’ “A” students failed miserably on the tests, whereas some systems’ “C” students scored well.
I know there are many, like you, who detest individuals being held to uniform standards of performance, but there are many compelling reasons to do so.
“The FACTS of the matter are opposite to your statement. The MCS funding is more than adequate. In fact, MCS is funded at ~40% higher per pupil than the surrounding systems. The MCS teachers are, in fact, the highest paid in the area.”
The fact of the matter are opposite to your lies. Who are you to proclaim MCS funding “more than adequate”? Are you a teacher? Are you an administrator? Like I thought, you don’t have a clue. Memphis is the biggest city in this region, so that little ignorant diatribe you just posted is somewhere between worthless and irrelevant.
Add to that fact the truth that you have not sat down with any MCS parent to discuss the problems with the school system (not to mention them), so that ridiculous statement “the children are “suffering” due to an abundance of irresponsible parenting. Some, like you, believe it’s the government’s ,and the school systems’, responsibility to parent children” is irresponsible, stupid and pathetic. No one wants the government to raise their kids, especially blacks, so quit acting like you are an authority on anything concerning blacks. You’re a piece of garbage, and that’s giving you credit. It is clowns like yourself that believe the government’s job is tot ake money from the people, and protect a few at the expense of the many. That is dumb no matter how you look at it, and so are you.
======================
George: Actually, the poster is correct. MCS students do get high funding. Most administrators I’ve talked with admit it’s not the money, it’s the lives the children lead and they can do little to change that.
